Crisis deepens

MaltaSong spat ends in court

Tensions between MaltaSong chairperson Robert Abela and former post-holder Grace Borg reached a head this week as Abela filed a libel suit against Borg, it was reported today.

The suit follows a very public clash between the two, after Borg claimed that protege Keith Camilleri, who sang as part of Switzerland's group Six4One in Athens, was unfairly treated by the Maltese delegation.

Borg's alleged defamatory comments were filmed on arrival from Athens at Malta's International Airport, and later broadcast on the Maltese programme Bondi+, aired on the channel TVM. Amongst other things, Borg is said to have claimed Abela was drunk in the green room during the show.

Abela's suit addresses both Borg and TVM, and Borg is requested to pay libel damages by Abela's lawyers. The clash between the two seems to have eclipsed any discussion of Malta's entry I do, after Fabrizio returned home with a single point and a last placing. It represents a response to the very public row, which tops an extremely disappointing year for Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest.
