Rebecca enters song for Spain 2007

Spanish popstar Rebeca is determined to win Spain's ticket to the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest. She has enlisted the help of Tony Sanchez-Ohlsson to write the lyrics of the song and Thomas G:son of Sweden, one of Melodifestivalen's most successful songwriters to write the music. Together, they hope to create the song to take Spain to a third Eurovision Song Contest victory. Today, esctoday.com spoke to the songwriters.

Popular Spanish singer Rebeca, is determined to represent Spain in the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest. The Spanish star, with a huge following in South America has been interested in representing Spain for several years but until recently felt that she did not have the right songs for the competition. She submitted a song in 2006 for TVE's internal selection, but the missed out to Las Ketchup, TVE's choice for Athens.

After TVE rejected her song, Que no daría yo, in 2006 during the internal selection, the singer has teamed up with Tony Sanchez-Ohlsson and Swedish song writer Thomas G:son to enter a song for Helsinki in 2007. The collaboration came about when Sanchez-Ohlsson, who lives in Spain, but has family in Sweden, contacted Thomas G:son to create a song that together with Rebeca, could take Spain to a long-awaited 3rd Eurovision Song Contest Victory.

Rebeca has been recording for 10 years. Her debut album, Rebeca, sold over 200,000 copies in Spain, South America and the USA, going double-platinum in Spain. Six further successful albums have followed: Rebelde (1997), Grease en Español (1998), Grandes Exitos (1999), Brava (2000), Supernatural (2002) and Lo Mejor De Rebeca (2005)

Tony Sanchez-Ohlsson talked to esctoday.com about Rebeca, saying:
"Rebeca is incredibly excited about the prospect of doing the Eurovision Song Contest. She considers herself to be brave, she knows it's a competition and you have to be brave to compete. She's been asked to participate in the past but has not entered because the songs that she had were not appropriate. Last year, she entered a song, but TVE chose Las Ketchup.

This year, she feels that she has a great song and she is 100% sure that it is a winning song. She has a great career in Spain and in South America and she does not think that the Eurovision Song Contest would jeopardise that. We've thought about entering in other countries, but she wants to show Europe that Spain has great artists and can win the Eurovision Song Contest again".

Talking about the Spanish final, Sanchez-Ohlsson said:
"We only just found out that there will be a national final in Spain. We don't know how it will work or whether there will be semi-finals yet. We don't even know when TVE will tell us if the song is accepted. Submissions will probably close in December with the final in February, but that is only what we assume".

Tony also spoke to us about the collaboration with Thomas G:son. He told us:
"I contacted Thomas because I have family in Sweden and I was brought up with Melodifestivalen. Thomas G:son has proved that he is one of the most versatile song-writers in the world. He can really see the personality and character of a singer and create a song to suit the artist".

Esctoday.com also spoke to Thomas G:son in Sweden today. He told us that he had been asked to work with Rebeca and Tony and had been excited to do so. Of the song, he told us "It's not typically Swedish, it's a cross between Spanish and Swedish. It's international with an Arabic flavour too".

Thomas is no stranger to competing either in Sweden or beyond his country's borders. He has so far entered three songs in the Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix, four entries in the Finnish finals, and last year he entered a song in Latvia's  Eirodziesma. So far this year, he has two songs in Sweden's Melodifestivalen and is hoping to be represented with songs in the United Kingdom final as well as the Spanish show.

@ Jamie - good point, so I guess the answer is no. One never knows though but hyped acts often fail to impress the audience. Depends on the other participants and the quality of their entries - I`ll be fair and wait with a final statement till all songs of the spanish NF are known. But I think we know now that swedish ESC songs aren`t invincible ;).

The only thing I can remember after watching the performance are those 2 hot mens and the jumps rebeca offers us,I hope better singers and better songs will take part in the contest "MISION EUROVISION" which has been confirmed for TVE as the way for choosing our song

@ Christina Giuntini

I agree with you: "Dile que la quiero" was indeed a very good song in the 2001 competition, but actually it didn't came 4th, it came 6th with 76 points in the end.

As for Thomas G :Son: I think Thomas is a great composer and lyricist and it is a fact that all his entries in the Eurovision (remember Friends in 2001 and Carola in 2006) had lots of succes reaching 5th place twice in the competition.

Greetings
DJ

I don't understand why she asked a swedish artist to write the music. I love the spanish style, I think they should just choose better songs. David Civera came 4th in 2001, and his song was great. Spain should take advantage of its latino style, not try to be similar to all the others.

Rebecca has not had a real hit in Spain for many years, I also doubt she had them in south America.

@ Drusus

Well the G'son songs entered outside Sweden haven't won yet so is there hope for Rebeca's entry?

I am glad to hear this from you Björn - thnaks :) !

@ Jamie....right, A ( ONE ) G.son Schlager, but wouldn`t it be boring to hear the same song, mixed with a little " ethnic flavour " from country x or country y again and again ? It would be better to concentrate on 1 or 2 strong songs instead of invading Europe with mass ware. But it is up to the fans and televoters to decide if they want mass or class. The MF ( = dominated by G Son, bobby ljundgren and Co ) hype each and every year makes me pessimistic about that decision though :(

I wouldn't even get worried. It's a national selection and the spanish public will decide upon what song they like and not just readers of esctoday so the fact that Rebeca is being hyped on here wont help her.

Oh and just to set the record straight I love a good G'son schlager.

Nothing against Rebecca, but please... Change the rules so that the song writers at least has to live in the country they enter songs for. We dont want a G :Son song from 20 countries in the ESC.

Really not impressed at all! Someone who tries so hard to stir hype like this does not get my attention at all. More of a die hard to me than anything else. I hope spain sends us some class, not cheapo plastic pop.

Btw " international with an Arabic flavour " ? That sounds like Arkaitz....let him do the job then. After reading the article again, I am worried about G.sons " expansion ", truely the new Siegel but with a more old fashioned sound.

Dear esc fans....why is there such a hype about Rebecca ? The song isn`t even known yet, and a entry by G.son doesn`t sound that promising, especially if he`s doing the typical MF stuff again ( maybe with a spanish guitar in the background )! Such a song wouldn`t work for Spain IMO. There are surely more great , experienced spanish singers...all of them deserve a fair chance and the same level of attention.

Zingo > What I meant is that a song in Spanish could really be as succesful as one in English! (in ESC or even commercially speaking...)

Thanks for all your support guys and we aim only for 1 thing: To make a better ESC and that you all like our song. Rebeca has been a eurofan for years as well and will work hard to be liked by you all and represent Spain the best possible. Once again. Thank you ;-)

English ? What for ? Silly lyrics going nowhere and telling the same old story about "I love that look in your eyes", "You make me feel like burning my heart in Ze dream of your sky"... English is not the key to success. Remember 2003 : Sanomi and Russian so close to the top !

axrl. isnt that show all about winning.if ya dont have any interest in winning why send a song??? its like sending a sportsman to the olympics without him wanting to win at all.

Axel Lando [33654]

Well maybe for other countries sending an entry in English would be better if they want to win, but for Spain I think it's different... Many songs in Spanish have a commercial success outside of Spain's borders, so I guess it wouldn't be useful to translate the song into English....

Sanomi should be the only language allowed at Eurovision !

a cute girl. but please spain send a song in english if you really want to win.

She looks great and sings well but I have to agree with Daniella, the song is nothing special... we've had loads of these dance type songs in the past and they never do as well as expected ....... however, that's not to say that the song she enters next year won't be great ....
