Meet the second row!

Misión Eurovisión Gala 2: semi-finalists

With the second show of Misión Eurovisión finished, we now know which artists have qualified for the semi-final to be held on February 6th. As we did last week, esctoday.com analyses the performances of the 5 entrants who have moved on to the next round: Nazaret, Mirela & Montse Mallorquín (selected by the viewers) and Paco Arrojo & Paraelissa (designated by Massiel and Mikel Herzog, advisors for the Spanish preselection process).

NAZARET
With a powerful performance of the Mónica Naranjo's song Sobreviviré, Nazaret rocked the stage tonight. Since the beginning of the voting round, this singer born in Ceuta was placed amongst the first places in the scoreboard. Nazaret was awarded 171 points, receiving maximum points from Aragon, Cantabria, Murcia, Navarre, Basque Country, La Rioja and Ceuta.

MIRELA
The youngest entrant tonight (16 years old) chose the most ESC-related song for her performance tonight: My number one, Helena Paparizou's winner from 2005. Mirela, who took part at Eurojunior 2004, the Spanish preselection for Junior Eurovision 2004, earned 164 points and became the runner-up tonight. Mirela, born in Aranjuez a town in greater Madrid, received 12 points from both Galicia and Madrid.

MONTSE MALLORQUÍN
A good voice, a powerful performance and an effective song were the main Montse's weapons to secure third place and the last spot qualified for the semi-final. Singing an arabic-inspirated song, Ojos así, from Shakira, gave Montse 104 points. Both archipelagos, the Balearic and the Canary Islands, gave her their 12 points, as well as the Autonomous Town of Melilla.

PACO ARROJO
Only 4 points separated Paco from the podium tonight. In the end, the advisors, Massiel and Mikel Herzog, decided to rescue him and reward him with a place in the semifinal. Paco has been devoted to music for 10 years and, as he said in his presenting video, representing Spain in Eurovision would be a dream come true  for him. Te quiero, te quiero earned 100 points, mostly from Extremadura (his native region), the 2 Castiles, Madrid and the Canary Islands.

PARAELISSA
The name of this group is taken from the Beethoven's composition For Elise, but their style is quite different. This rock band was not amongst the public's favourites tonight: Paraelissa only ranked 8th with 72 points--but the advisors clearly liked them. Castile-La Mancha and Madrid rewarded their performance, No me crees, with 10 points each .

On the other hand, the refreshed band La Década Prodigiosa (Spain 1988's heirs) was not lucky in the tonight's show and only could arrange 69 points, being placed on the 9th position in the final chart. They chose the song La chica que yo quiero (made in Spain) to perform.

The final results of the spanish televote were:

I agree that the viewer's ratings will increase as we approach the final. 4 galas is too much, they shoud have done just 2 or 3, with less singers (some of them don't fit at all in Eurovision).

I didn't watch any of the first two shows but from what I read below I now realise what I fear happens : Spanish manage to find a more terrific system than France last year. Which is already a great challenge !!!

TU VOZ SE APAGARÁ is the best song and i think could be singed by REBECA!

I did not like none of the singers of yesterday :S :S BORED!

Interesting how Spain went from internal selections with no public input to a very drawn out public process that doesn't make very much sense. Going from one extreme to the other is a bit silly, especially when the process doesn't seem to have been thought out properly.

So basically voting for the song online doesn't make very much sense either unless the artist on the demo gets to sing the song live, or else the song may sound very different, in which case it's not really the same song that's been voted on. How does that translate to public input on the selection?

I am not sure the composers are too happy at the thought that their song, which may have been written for a particular singer (and I am referring to Thomas G :Son and Rebeca for I love you mi viday), will be sung by five different artists and there is at least a slim chance (considering Massiel's and Hrezog's weird choices so far) that a song may end up in ESC with an artist that the composer is unhappy with or that is not very right for the song.

Keep the online voting for next year Spain, since many of us are fans of Spanish music and enjoy listening to some of the selections, and put together a process where the artist and the song begin and end the journey towards ESC together.

Until then I wish I could see the final since I am sure it will be quite interesting to see each song interpreted five different ways.

I can't believe that TVE would make artists sing a fraction of all 5 songs, I imagine if they did then some of the lyrics would have to change... mind you I don't think "busco una mujer" quite fits into the song Busco un hombre, but you never know!!!

I imagine that the final 5 acts will get allocated one of the final 5 songs and then they will be reproduced with that act in mind. I don't see there's any other way they can do it without the whole thing being totally ridiculous.

To be honest, the whole process seems overly long and a lot more complicated than the Operación Triunfo system. The problem with a process like this, is that whilst there is a lot of room for a great song and performance from Spain, they run the risk of ending up with a complete no-hoper. Anyone have memories of the disasterous Portuguese selection process in 2001?

@Jamie UK
Yes, this 5x5 combination system might bring us some funny things. I also imagine the drag queen song with the lyrics 'I'm the queen of the night' performed by a male (and masculine type) singer or boy band... indeed very funny ;)

I really don't understand why the so-called jury continues to select rock bands for the semi-final as they don't match one single song... And the best songs in this year's selection are obviously designed for female voices...

@Ramon Ramos
I'm not surprised to see such low figures. Where is the interest for the large public to follow the first galas as nothing is really decided there? You really need to be a fan or someone wanting to push a specific artist to keep on watching for hours and hours... If at least the artist would already chose one of the songs of the pre-selection it would be already more interesting... I suppose that for the final gala - and the final decision - the viewing figures will come back to normal.

Dramatic audience drop: only 11%, 1.400.000 viewers. I ask my self, what's wrong with this show? The normal audience for the ESC in Spain is 4.000.000 people, reaching a peak in 2005 with more than 10.000.000 people.

@ Mick D.

Really!?! What a stupid idea! Well I can't imagine Poker or Paraelissa (should they get through)singing 'I Love You Mi Vida'. I assumed that songs would be allocated appropriately.

Mind you I'd love to see one of the male singers singing the song 'Busco un hombre' with the 'I Need A Man' refrains.

@Jamie UK
I don't think that the songs will be "allocated" as you say in a way that there will be one song per artist in the final. The final will be five artists singing only fragments of each song (well, of the five songs that will make it to the final). So five artists x 5 songs = 25 possible combinations. I wonder how long this final show will run... ;)

What a boring and long process!

Ooh, so after the four semis there will be a final to select the five artists for the final! Hope Massiel is ready for that one! Maybe she should bring her sleeping bag cos god knows how long it will take to whittle down the 20 artists to the final five.

@ Christian

Not till all the artists have been chosen. I think their are two more semis to select the singers, then a final to select the finalists. That's when the songs will be allocated and the song and artist for Spain 2007 will finally be picked. Personally I hope that Nessa will get to sing 'Destiny'.

When will someone sing "Destiny" ?

I didn't realise it ran so late! I watched the results bit which finished about 12.30am in the UK! Poor Massiel - I bet she's used to being tucked up in bed at that time of night.

As for the chosen artists I was quite pleased with all chosen apart from the dreadful Paraelissa. The other four I could imagine singing one of the songs that TVE have lined up.

I'm glad that more female singers dominated the winning spots this week especially on hearing the songs. Paco would be great for the G'son song with the male vocal.

Can anyone explqain why TVE continued the show for half an hour after the result was ready - until 2AM? Even the audience in the studio started booing!

What are you thinking about it?

Well, what can I say? I was practically sinking into the sofa with shame as the votes came in.
Not a great selection of "talent" as Massiel likes to call it. Barbies and Beelzebub pass to the semis.
Paco Arrojo was great but as he admitted, the song was not the right one. Mirela didn't impress me as much but was also very good.

The star of the night as usual was Massiel with her priceless comments. Her best one so far came at approximately 2am, when the show was STILL running. (I think it finished around 6am with most of the contestants passing out). Her comment was something to the extent of .. "come on, you're not paying me to work in an after-hours bar".... Massiel for Eurovision 2008!!!!! Bring her back.

If I had my wish it would be Paraelissa singing Destiny not because of its qualities as a great song, but just to hear how they would interpret it! but what I would have given ANYTHING for would be to have heard Hotel Cochambre singing any of the fifteen songs.

As for these bands like Poker and Paraelissa, in fairness, can any of you see them singing any of the chosen songs? There is nothing in that style and yet the "organización" has saved TWO of this type of band.

Roll on Gala 3.
