Artist(s) revealed on 25th February

Belgium: Artist chosen

Walloon broadcaster RTBF will be responsible to choose the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest participant. They went for an internal selection to choose song and singer(s) that will be revealed on 25th February during the second edition of Bonnie & Clyde, a new program by Jacques Mercier and Armelle. Partner website belgovision.com suggests that the selection will be between Eté 67 and Saule et les Pleureurs, but nothing has officially been confirmed yet.

While the Flemish VRT TV broadcaster is known for 'big' national finals, including semi finals (and, as in 2006, quarter finals), RTBF used to have a smaller selection: After an internal selection in 2003 that resulted in 2nd place achived by Urban Trad with their song Sanomi, the 2005 national included only two participants. The result was deceiving: Nuno Resende finished 22nd (second from last) in the semi final with Le grand soir. RTBF have not officially confirmed the news, but the leaked information in La Dernière wrote: says:

There is a big chance that one of the above mentioned bands will represent Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest. According to rumours which reached La Dernière Heure, it will be a band from Liège, most probably Été 67. Their modern music style and the fact that the band has a good relation with RTBF is an extra reason to believe so.

But also Saule et les Pleureurs, a band from Mons, is scheduled to appear in the emission of Bonnie & Clyde in which the Belgian representative for Helsinki will be presented. They also have a good relation with RTBF and with show director Franco Dragone.

Leslie Cable, leader of the Belgian delegation, stresses that everything will remain top secret until 25th February.

In 2006, Kate Ryan finished 12th in the semi final with Je t'adore. Therefore, the next Belgian representative will once again have to enter the qualification heat in Helsinki.

Trivia

Over the years, the Walloon broadcaster was by far more succesful than VRT TV. Both the only Belgian victory (1986, Sandra Kim with J'aime la vie) and the only two runner-up positions (1978 and 2003) were reached by Walloon contestants. The best result by a Flemish representative was back in 1959  - a 6th place (out of only 11 contestants) by Bob Benny with Hou toch van mij, the best out of only five Top 10 placings with the last one in 1977 (Dream Express - A million in 1, 2, 3, 7th place). On the other hand, only two out of eight last places were achieved by RTBF, in 1962 (Fud Leclerc - Ton nom) and 2000 (Nathalie Sorce - Envie de vivre).

It's a tradition that Belgium have good songs but never get good points. But one day we 'll win again and the happiness will be so big then! I like the system we have now in Belgium. Once Flanders, once the Walloons, it's good like that.
But the latest news from the Belgian contestant 2007 is not true. Only one of the groups will be in B&C the other one not and the contestant will not be announced in that same show! It's QUATSCH!!

Zo is er maar een does not creates new Dutch/Flemish language songs which Flanders desperately needs at the moment to get a richer cultural heritage than just every time the same old songs and singers. VRT coproduces a lot with the Netherlands from where they also get money. Steracteur - sterartiest is a show with actors screaming old anglophone hits mostly instead of creating something new. VRT should invest their money in Flemish culture, not in Anglophone culture.

VRT...RTBF..there IS in fact a huge difference but the latter has done effort to get rid of its nasty notority. Unfortunately, up until now..Without succes worth mentioning.

Anyway:
All DAAN has been talking about in papers lately is: how he would love to go to EUROVISION without having to deal with a national final, how he entered a song last time for Eurosong 2006, and how COOl it would be if RTBF asked him to represent them...
I'd say Mr. Stuyven is preparing himself for the 25th ;)

@ Jan1964: you're right I also don't like their programming and the fact they hardly support Flemish music, but shows like Zo is er maar één, steracteur sterartiest, eurosong... cost a lot of money. And the costs of programs like Thuis, Emma, Witse, Flikken... are also very high (RTBF doesn't have such own shows and sitcoms, they mostly buy their programs) I doubt if that RTBF satellite channel is such a good investment

RTBF has an own satelite channel, VRT constantly repeats the same programmes (like De Kampioenen, the alphabet of the VRT) and has a too horizontal programming. From about 18h to 21 h VRT TV1 always broadcasts the same on weekdays. VRT hardly invests in new Flemish/Dutch-language music. There is hardly renewal. Constantly Ann Christy with Gelukkig zijn for instance.

My guess would be the caféteria! That's probably where the money go.. desserts and stuff. :D

I especially noticed the sentence 'the band has a good relation with RTBF' twice, which is typical. I know someone who works at VRT and he affirms that that is the way RTBF always works: you only get in if you have connections. But I keep my fingers crossed they will choose for quality instead of relationships
One small question though: what does RTBF do with all their money? VRT spends heaps of money on singing shows (not only Eurosong), own sitcoms and programs, while RTBF is always broke. As far as I know they both are subsidized broadcasters who receive relatively more or less the same amount of money from the state + RTBF has commercials which VRT doesn't

I always felt sorry for the Belgian Eurovision fans (from what I see there are many more Flemish and none Wallonians) Their country only competes once every two years, At least in the 90ies-2003 they should automatically be allowed in every year without relegation, because they are two different countrie with nothing in common with eachother except for the kings, and they dont even support the others song in the eurovision.

Belgium was the runner up in 1978, not in 1979!

both groups are totally unknown in flanders but who knows?

Both artists are good but I fear they might not be the good ones for a song contest. They are "nouvelle scène", but who knows what will happen?

This will be interesting. I say: Bring back Mélanie Cohl! At least she had a decent song, but the girl needs a stylist.

I've always preferred the VRT songs but they don't do so well as we know. It's definately unique of Belgium to have alternate TV companies selecting the song!

Belgium has been robbed so many times before, Urban Trad should have won, and Kate Ryan should have reached the final, Xandee should have recieved many more points. It's time for high position in the final for Belgium

Ow I hope we send a beautifull song
hope Europe gives us a ticket to the final
we deserve it ...
