From Eurovision to burgers

Johnny Logan: McDonalds’ new face

King of the Eurovision Song Contest, Johnny Logan, is the new face of McDonalds in Ireland. He is used in TV adverts for a new burger menu and on the internet he gives words of wisdom to any problems people might have. He has also made up eight rules to everyday life.

The campaign, which features three different TV adverts, are for McDonalds’ Eurosaver, a low price menu mainly aimed at students and teenagers. As such the choice of using Johnny Logan, who is now 52 years old, might not seem ideal, but according to Irish newspaper, The Sunday Business Post, this has been arranged after he re-released the two Eurovision Song Contest winners Hold me now and What’s another year in collaboration with the Belgian rapper Kaye Styles last year.

One of the TV commercials can be seen further down this article.

Included in this McDonalds campaign is a website where you can ask Johnny Logan all sorts of questions and he will as it says, “reply with words of wisdom that will solve any problem”. Wisdom or not, he is also giving his 8 rules to everyday life:

Rule nr. 1:  Image is very important. Consider wearing a white suit.
Rule nr. 2:  Never be rude to a foreign tourist. They all have votes come Eurovision time.
Rule nr. 3:  If you get dumped - remember, there’s plenty more fish in the sea. Although getting it on with a fish is disgusting.
Rule nr. 4:  You can never have enough Eurovision wins.
Rule nr. 5:  If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. Not that I’d know, I entered the Eurovision 3 times and won it three times, but hey, that’s just me.
Rule nr. 6:  A free gaff is never guaranteed until you ring your parents and you hear that foreign ring-tone.
Rule nr. 7:  How long should you wait until asking out your best mate’s ex? Johnny’s rule is: You should wait at least a whole weekend, anything less is sick.
Rule nr. 8:  Hey and if all else fails, there’s always a McFlurry waiting to help you take your mind off things!

As many will have noticed Johnny Logan seems to have a lack in his memory when he says that he entered the Eurovision Song Contest three times and won it three times! The flights might be on time in Terminal 3, but this Irish entry from 1984 seem to have made no greater impact on him, despite the fact that he actually wrote it himself! The song came second, only 8 points behind the actual winner, Herreys from Sweden.

He is right in the number of victories as he won the contest in 1980 with What’s another year and again in 1987 with his own song Hold me now. In 1992 he wrote Why me for Linda Martin which gave Mr. Logan his third victory – but it was indeed his 4th attempt!

Here you can see one of the three TV adverts:

The version of Hold me now with Kaye Styles that seems to have led to this McDonalds campaign can be seen here:

The song from 1984, which Johnny Logan ”forgot” that he actually wrote, can be seen here:

His most popular entry, Hold me now which won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1987 can be seen below. In this performance he is living up to his own rule number 1 about wearing a white suit.

Johnny Logan’s The Best Of album released in 2005 includes What’s another year (Eurovision winner 1980), Hold me now (Eurovision winner 1987) in a version from 2001, Why me (Eurovision winner 1992) in Logan’s own version and also Let’s make love which is a duet with Natasja Crone, the Danish host of the 2001 Eurovision Song Contest. DISGUSTING! How can he disgrace Eurovision in this way! The most unethical company in the world. Number 2 Nike, number 3 Coca Cola. All American. Funny that! I am going to bin all his CDs.

"Hold me now" is a quite good slogan for hamburgers. I mean thats one of the big points with hamburgers, that you can hold them and that you don't need tableware. "Why me" on the other hand is probably more suited for a placard in vegan demonstration, underlining a picture of a cute little calf.

looking at how bloated johnny looks , hes been spending too much time in mcdonalds! actually i think the ad is quite sad, and, pathetic almost. which is a shame cos love him or loathe him , hes been a great ambassador for eurovision over the years.
p.s
i agree with those who say mcdonalds burgers are the junkiest of junk food, but their strawberry milkshakes are to die for!!

Sounds yummy!!! :P
And, YES, I would like some fries with that, please! :D

IDEA: Has he considered striking a deal with McDonald's
to have his or other ESC winning songs (all, EXCEPT Waterloo)
heard during his campaign ? That would be great ...

Here is something I would like to share
that is extremely relevant to Mr. Eurovision:

My partner and I consider Johnny Logan's "Hold Me Now" :)
to be one of the most romantic SONGS ever written!!!
During one of our very first dates, we heard it playing
on the radio and we both just started to sing along and ...
well, I have a feeling that it will be our wedding song! ;)

@Kevin Night
He won twice performing, but he also wrote 'Why Me', the 1992 winner, so he has won 3 times

Anything is a vast inprovement on that tasteless clown. McDonalds are cheap and tacky, and the last time I blew the wrapper through the straw, some McBloke said 'Could you not do that'. Put me off them ever since! (hehe) Subway are miles better

The new ad is up on his bebo profile
url=http://Johnnyloganrules.bebo.com]http://Johnnyloganrules.bebo.com/url]

I think they're trying to turn him into the David Hasslehoff of Ireland - and they're doing a pretty good job - except a recent survey of McDonalds demographic market revealed that 70% of them didnt even know who Johnny Logan was!!

You're right, Johnny, image is everything. And you just ruined yours.
