Malta: Rehearsals underway
This year it seems that the level of organisation is very high, especially when compared to previous years. The staging is also impressive, with a fully functioning modern stage with an up-to-date digital set. It is, however, understandable that the limited size of the MCC, a much smaller venue, did not permit such stages.
This year, there will be a semi final in Malta, from which six songs will qualify to the Go Mobile Malta Song for Europe 2007 final on Saturday night. The semi final winners will be decided by 50% televote and 50% special jury. The final winner on Saturday will be decided by 100% televoting.
Earlier today, the first half of the running order for Thursday's semi final took their turn to rehearse on stage: You can click on the name of the singer or song to watch the rehearsal video courtesy of partner website www.escmalta.com.
Kevin Borg - Whenever
Kevin Borg was accompanied on stage by the composer of the song Jason Cassar, who is on a black piano. The lighting during the song is in blue. Kevin gave a very good rendition of his song where his high vocal capabilities could be heard. It seems that no problems were faced by Kevin during the song. When speaking to Kevin, he confirmed that he is very happy with this year's sound and stage.
Tarcisio Barbara - Places To Go
Tarcisio Barbara was next on stage. Tarcisio is accompanied by a whole band, and all his backing is being done live. As background Tarcisio has different coloured boxes on screen. Once again there seem to be no sound or any other problems this year.
Claudia Faniello - L-Imhabba Ghamja
Claudia is accompanied by the Romanian DJ Cat Solo, together with two female dancers. Claudia starts the show by coming out from a door with a big Maltese knights cross. As for background on the screen this song has the colourful sound equalizer which at times also include a female dancer and fire. Vocally the song was sung very well by Claudia, however the choreography still needs some polishing up. At times DJ Cat solo also joins into the dance routine.
ROSMAN PACE - Rollercoaster Ride
Rosman opened the second set of rehearsals after the break. His energetic song went down very well with the people in the hall. The singer is accompanied by two female dancers, whilst the screens show a literal rollercoaster ride. The lights are used very well during the song, especially when in the chorus white light flashes on stage.
JULIA GRIMA - Ice Queen
Julia comes out very well on stage. She is accompanied by Mark Spiteri Lucas, the composer, on the piano. During the first takes, the performance also included a mirror on stage which seems to have been removed. The screen during this song shows chrome circles. Julie makes use of the whole stage during this song.
WILLIAM MANGION - Forever Mine
William Mangion was together with a whole band and two violinists, who are placed in between of the lights. It creates a great effect. From information we have, it seems that William Mangion is a bit sick however the rehearsal went on fine. The background colour on the screens is green for this song. The guitar is played by Aldo Spiteri who is the composer of the song.
OLIVIA LEWIS - Vertigo
Olivia's background colours are red and gold. Lighting used is red whilst gold features on the screens. Olivia is accompanied by Joseph Chetcuti on the violin who gives a nice show in the centre of the stage and also a male dancer who also plays the gong. The dancer in the middle of the song joins Olivia and Joseph at the centre of the stage and does a dance routine using also two hand fans. Olivia comes out from behind the gong at the beginning of the song.

pamela or trilogy has the best performance and they are to go to finland!!
i think pamela is going to b ethe surprise of the night!!!
@ KYLE
that's my girl.
There are only two songs in the first group of semi finalists that i like.
Kevin Borg is OK, slow but nice.
I really like Julia Grima with Ice Queen..... It's so Disney! Love it!!!
Well said Kylie. I love Vertigo.
OK let's finally put an end to all this nonsense....
To the others who TRY to make us Maltese feel ashamed about the songs we select etc, you can keep trying and trying but at the end of the day you'll be the ones who would be dissappointed by wasting time from your prescious lives as us Maltese are proud of our country & all the talent we can offer despite the FEW bad results we had.
For a country small as ours we have done very well over the past years & we certainly won't quit until we get the victory we deserve. FULLSTOP !
@ pinu borg
what exagerated props are you talking about ?!!!!! joseph chetcuti ? or were you talking about the dancer ? lol you must have watched some other performance as there weren't any exagerated props on stage. If you were talking about the gong i love it ! .. it suits the song ! i actually love everything she had in her performance & olivia's live vocal performance was simply fantastic.
i was very disappointed with Claudia Faniello as i expected something more.
I love the fact that along with Pamela, Nadine axisa, Fiona, Paul Giordimaina & Andrew Zammit will join her on stage as backing vocalists !
@Thodoris
You will have the opportunity to vote for which dress olivia wears. Cos she has 2 different dresses (not the one she wore yesterday) and it will be up to the visitors of her website www.olivialewis.net to decide! Pls vote wisely! (Will that make malta qualify? hehe)
@ theodoris
4 get the dress.............. as if she will wear that thing on the nite. lol
@ NIKKI
dump ur bitterness else where baby!!
@ Nicki
how i wish malta gets a good result just to shut the mouth of such stupid people.
remember Chiara. how much offenseness...people on this site clling her the big blue whale and much more...everyboady shut his mouth after the result...hope the same happens to you
BTW Maltese is only spoken by Maltese people (half a million people) and we're proud of it. Unlike French, English, Spanish, Italian and all other European Languages we're not widespread...so our language is understood only by maltese...jek nibatek tixejer mintix se tifimni bil malti...loool
Go all maltese singers and do what all the previous ones did...make us proud...placing doesn't matter unless we don't fall in jelosy insultnatness like these.
MALTA
What an awful performance by Olivia Lewis!!!Really awful!!!This will be the first time that malta will miss the contest since 1991!Sorry,but with these clothes, noone will vote for her!I'm very sorry!
Go ISABELLE!
@ nikki supporter
so wots ur point dude?
Rehearsals from Malta underway! Wow, watched olivia's performance yesterday and it was very good. There is a violin and a gong on stage which really fit the song, and this was by far the best song from this first set.
I remember there being lots of rumours about why Seventh Wonder did so well...... it was very cloak and dagger. I didn't know which was worse in 2002 - Malta or Latvia. It was such a shockingly awful Top 2.
but nicki.....we were last because the songs were in maltese and nobody undertood one word. Fabrizio last year......i can't understand why that happened. well, neighbour voting and a bad vocal performance helped in that disappointment!!!
hopefully this year we'll do much much better!!!
i must admit that claudia's performance didn't impress me at all. even her vocal performance wasn't as good as I expected. Olivia on th eother hand had a great vocal performance and her stage performance wasn't bad but she has much more to do to impress me!!!
Olivia with exagerrated props again? Oh no! When is she to learn from past mistakes?
i remember when chiara was chosen with 'the one that i love' everybody was saying we'll be last and we were 3rd! Everybody said that ira losco's 7th wonder was babyish and we got to the 2nd place. everybody said that julie and ludwig's song was an animation song but they succeeded to go through the semi and succeeded to pass also in the final. we'll wait and see. these were the first rehersals. Its true that nothing interesting happened but let's hope for a better performance. Still, I am abit disappointed by claudia and olivia! I think Trilogy, Isabelle and Anabelle might be better!!! we'll see
I always ask Why Malta? The songs are just completely bland. Not a great ad for the islands. But this year there is a little more grit. Lets hope the international jury chooses well. Wink.
malta finished last only once in 2006...on the contrary in 2005 MALTA finished second with the great ballad of chiara 'ANGEL'
I can agree that the stageappearances of most participants was very lame at this rehearsal, especially Claudia and Olivia need to put in much more effort, I think...
But the songs themselves are not that bad as some say here - I have six songs that I think is good or very good. My hopes for top 6 are:
1. Olivia Lewis - 5/5
2. Trilogy - 5/5
3. Isabelle - 4/5
4. Julie Pomorsky - 4/5
5. Claudia - 3+/5
6. Julia Grima - 3/5
But what i THINK is that Isabelle will win. A classic ESC-song, where the verses are much stronger than the chorus...it reminds me a bit of Israels "Hasheket shenishar"...and that one reached 4th place, remember...
Anyway, Malta always surprises me concerning the high standard of their songs...it´s such a small island and still they produce really good entries year after year.
GO MALTA!!
@ Mario Marino - how come ? You don`t know the Andorran song yet !
