The Late Late Show
Live: Irish national final
You can follow the live webcast here.
Here are the 4 songs:
- "They can't stop the spring"' - written by John Waters and Tommy Moran.
- "Walk with me" - written by Stig Lindell.
- "The thought of you" - written by Matti Kallio.
- "Until we meet again" - written by Malachi Cush, Pam Sheyne, Martin Sutton and Don Mescall
LIVE
At the beginning, a choir is performing a classical version of Waterloo, which is quite different from the orginal version. Nevertheless, an ABBA cover follows on stage right after to sing the song in the well-known pop style.
Dervish are now introduced by the host of the night. They recceive a very warm applause by the audience. While the band goes off stage, three guests join on stage. Among them - like last year - the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest winner Linda Martin.
The thought of you - written by Matti Kallio
The stage turns into deep blue for the first song. A typical Irish ballad is performed. Listening to the song for the first time, there is no obvious hook. Especially towards the end, the song includes many high notes which also shows the Celtic influences.
Walk with me - written by Stig Lindell
Now the stage is red. The song is in a similar style as the first one but with a more catchy chorus - the key cange at the end is a typical Eurovision Song Contest feature. The vocal performance is very good, even a bit stronger than during the first song.
Until we meet again - written by Malachi Cush, Pam Sheyne, Martin Sutton and Don Mescall
It's a more lively song - a country-style entry that could have well been sung by Sheryl Crow. Nevertheless, the classical instruments leave an Irish touch which might be expected in the Eurovision Song Contest. The biggest applause by the audience so far.
They can't stop the spring - written by John Waters and Tommy Moran
A long flute intro that reminds of The voice. The song itself includes medieval elements and is more similar to the first and second entry. The lead singer takes her drum during the performance and joins the other bands members.
One of the guests now gets a negative reaction: He states that he actually doesn't really like the songs and that he thinks that they won't have a big chance in Helsinki referring to similar songs written by Brendan Graham.
The interval act of the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest, which was co-hosted by Pat Kenny, is now played once again. Dana (National) is now on stage, performing her 1970 winning song All kinds of everything in a more mature version. Another winner is performed now: Eimear Quinn sings The voice once again.
While the 1976 winners present Save your kisses for me again, the winning song is about to be revealed.

No, 'fraid not. The chorus almost gets there but not quite - it's not catchy enough, by any stretch of the imagination. Too contrived towards pan European acceptance and Ireland performing too early in the contest. All of this will mitigate against you winning, me old chums.
And sorry, Sean - like it or not, Northern Ireland is STILL very much a part of the United Kingdom and looks like it's gonna stay that way for a long time to come.
ireland ireland
ireland ireland
unique song, Ireland back to its former glory
i love the lyrics & meaning...as the soviet tanks rolled into czechoslovakia the students threw flowers in front of them, the czech president 'dubcek quoted ' they may crush the flowers but the cant stop the spring, they wont stop the spring...
Of the 14 songs chosen this could win it!
Congratulations, Ireland, on a brilliant choice. This song could easily win for you, it's a top-5 placing at the very least.
Why can't the UK celebrate its Celtic heritage and send something equally strong - something Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish, or Manx or Cornish. There's no doubt in my mind that we'll end up sending the usual, bland, middle-of-the-road crap. It's infuriating, depressing and frustrating, the result of a country with no identity and with too many poorly-fitting facets to its personality.
Bad choice for Ireland...........
My votes..
1. Belarus (By far the best and the only I really like)
2. Moldova (The song is very good whereas Natalia almost can't sing and perform)
3. Denmark (Average song but the performers are perfect)
4. Netherlands (Average song but on the other hand Endsilia sings very very well)
5. Norway (It has only a good rhythm)
6. Malta (Bad)
7. Romania (Bad)
8. Estonia (Bad)
9. Ireland (Very weak)
10. Slovenia (Out of topic)
11. Albania (No comment)
12. Poland (No comment)
Yeh i really liked her style but the tuning was rough!!! Singing in song A was painfully out of tune. Here in Dublin that singing woulld be any1's idea of a crackin after party. Bet its the same in Belfast.
Bet theyd be a good live band though. came across like decent folk who'd be up for a good time once they were into the swing. Ireland might stand a chance this year if they have a few pints and warm up before.
Are they the best performers weve got in Ireland though?????? Thats what it shoukld boil down to for this sort of comp.
kathys voice is just different. she sings naturally and sounds proper irish and not Oirish!!! At least in Ireland we willing to send a song that sounds like it from Ireland. Like the Danish song could be from anywhere in the world.......and its not going to win because I think Europe is sick of the novelty acts and is loking for something real to win. ok as for our chances....well we have a good chance of top 5 and maybe just maybe we could win it. Dublin 2008.........no better still Belfast 2008 and yes RTE are allowed to hold it in Northern Ireland as everyone knows Belfast is in Ireland and not the UK!! Anyway i doubt in this day and age anyone in northern Ireland would object as it would give a great city like Belfast a great boost.
Wow. Great to see so many of you guys were into song C. Don & Malachi are both talented chaps in their own right. If either of them record it it'll be a whole different song! Don mescall's myspace music is ace.
Would've LOVED to see C win! Hands down it was the best song but her voice was seriously dodgy! She seemed more comfortable singing D.
its not sarcasm i loved the icidental music in titanic the movie and this reminded me of it too much
will she stand at the bow of a ship with leonardo de caprio !it was so titanic, a typical irish tune sadly i dont think it will win
Congratulations Dervish - I knew yous'd win!
Well, at last a qualitative song again... I am not convinced that it will be a winner, not even top ten but it is still a very GOOD song.
Irish entry is OK. Here is my TOP 12 :
1. The Netherlands
2. Malta
3. Belarus -------> If Dimitry perform his song in Helsinki so badly it will be last in my TOP !
4. IERLAND --------> song C was a great song ! Bad choice
5. Romania
6. Slovenia
7. Norway
8. Moldova
9. Poland
10. Estonia
11. Denmark
12. Albania
I Just love it! Good Luck
I think the rest of us should give up now. This is the winner. It will win by a mile. It is back to 1996. The rest of Europe is defenceless.
Nice song, could be in the top spots with the jury sistem but I'm not sure about nowadays... anyway, got my fingers crossed for Jonsi tomorrow, what a damn great song!!
Very nice! Top 5 for Ireland! Good luck!
