Iceland decided: Eiríkur Hauksson to Helsinki

Tonight, Iceland has held their national final for the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest. The televoters have decided that they want to be represented by Eiríkur Hauksson in the semi final of the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Ég les í lófa ţínum. The entry had to be performed in Icelandic in the national final but may be performed in any other language in Helsinki. Eiríkur won by a landslide, getting a stunning 60% of the televote.

You can watch the show again here and find exclusive video material here. The esctoday.com live coverage can be read here.

The top three were announced at the end of the show:

  1. Eiríkur Hauksson- Ég les í lófa þínum
  2. Friðrik Ómar - Eldur
  3. Hafsteinn Þórólfsson - Þú tryllir mig

Eiríkur Hauksson  was a member of the group Icy, the very first Icelandic representatives (16th with Gleðibankinn). In 1991, he was a member of Just 4 fun, the Norwegian representatives. They finished 17th with Mrs. Thompson.

The heavy metal vocalist was born on 4th July 1959 in Iceland but moved to Østfold in Norway in 1988. He played an important role in the Icelandic pop music scene during the 1980s, although his interest went with the heavy metal genre. Among others, he has sung for the Icelandic group Start and the Norwegian group Artch. Eiríkur was also in Iceland's of singers who recorded Hjálpum þeim, an equivalent of Do they know it's Christmas? and We are the world.

Erikur has been for many years the Icelandic commentator in the Nordic previews with Iceland, Norway, Finland, Sweden and Denmark. He is a clear favourite with fans as he is quite outspoken by character and doesn't always go with what is politically correct.

Azra

Unlike a Bosnian to carry a grudge against someone just because they come from a country they have decided they don't like. Eirkur has nothing to do with Silvia. Get over it.

I guess I'm still under impression of Sylivia, she's all I see when I listen to this song. Sorry guys, but she did you more damage than you're even aware of. I don't like the song (speaking objectively now) but I wish you luck anyway.

Greetings from Bosnia :)

hehe u still don't know why?
ok I can tell you...it's all because they gave all their voice, song, dance....it was from all heart
and they were having not many money....boys put up a good show with their own costumes...

And all this is called simplisity...
So simplicity pull people... ;)

To Iceland.....it's really nice song but i don't understand your language....so i don't know about what is your song.....

And yes, I think that the Icelandic entry is the best (with Denmark, which is an absolute and perfect synonym of dancing) of the nordic songs by now. Norway is... nahhh compared to last year's... Finland has made a big mistake with this song, and the same with Estonia, which definitely won't reeach the Final if didn't do it last year. Just hope that Lithuania don't send that cheap and horrible team of crazy singers... I had enough with LT United, the worst entry of the History.

The problem with the Albanian entry is that is veeeeeeeeeery boring. It's not like the other last big ballads (Serbia and Montenegro and Cyprus in 2004, Malta and Israel in 2005, Bosnia-Herzegovina last year), which have placed very high. I recommend to listen to one of the possible candidates to represent Greece: For love, performed by Tamta. This is an ethnic ballad, as Albanian entry is, but a lot more special and dynamic. The problem with ballads is that, if they are not charming, they have nothing to do. And the Albanian song, for some reason, is not as magical as some of the balkan ballads use to be. About Iceland, the song is good, much better than the finnish entry, but it won't reach the Final because has nothing special.

Bring back Silvia. It might grow on me I suppose, but most of Europe will only hear this once, and he's not much of a looker to boot. Here's my ranking:

1. Albania. Magical & mysterious.
2. Malta. Bonkers!
3. Slovenia. It's like the fall of Communism never happened, hurrah!
4. Belarus. Love the Bond intro, but his big nose lets it down.
5. Norway. She could be Gina G's mum, and that's good enough for me.
6. Netherlands. Great voice & a good tune.
7. Romania. It's easy to like, but doesn't really go anywhere.
8. Moldova. The best of this sort of thing.
9. Poland. It's a messy mix, but she's good.
10. Estonia. A much better song than Finland. Should do Star's in their eyes.
11. Iceland. Moody, boring.
12. Denmark. He's come straight from the building site. Super cheesy.
13. Ireland. What is this about? Terribly mournful tone. Will probably win.
14. Finland. Silly lyrics. Leave me alone, with pleasure.

after listened to it a second time, i must say,
this could reach the final, nothing less but nothing more

i think he was chosen because iceland knows him more than fridrik omar
eldur was the only one
but eirikur, please make a good performance in helsinki
always better than finns hanna or norways guri

My ranking of the songs which are found until now:

1. Ireland (Great song! Love Irish folk music)
2. Belarus (very catchy)
3. Denmark (happy song – just want to dance!)
4. Moldova (best song ever from Moldova, a little like Evanescence which is a plus!)
5. Romania (very humorous)
6. Malta (like the ethnical rhythms and music)
7. Estonia (good song, average)
8. Norway (fine song.. But Norway, I know you can do better)
9. Finland (good song, but too monotonous)
10. The Netherlands (actually I think it’s the best song which represents The Netherlands since Linda in 2000)
11. Poland (Sorry, but what’s going on in Poland? It sounds like there are two or three song in one!)
12. Iceland (Iceland, I know you can do better!)
13. Slovenia (not quite good)
14. Albania (I think the title (=stone ballad) fits the song well!)

Maybe I sound a bit harsh, but – in compare to last year the level this year is MUCH higher.. And when you have listen to the songs a few times more than the first time (even Albania’s), I think they’re better.. So don’t take my comments literally..

@ neal widmer: "they choose an overaged wannabe rocker" - he's not a "wannabe" ocker, he IS a rocker... And a good one. No is he "overaged" either (what exactly is "overaged? I didn't know there's a maximum age limit to participating in ESC...)

i would love iceland to win but this song not strong enough

of all the songs Ireland has the best chance
i love the lyrics & meaning

as the soviet tanks rolled into prague 68, the students threw flowers in front, the czech president
declared 'the may crush the flowers but they cant stop the spring, they wont stop the spring......

good luck iceland & ireland

nordic countries in this years song contest made not good choices

norway: guri schanke
crash was much better

finland: hanna pakarinen
dont like her, more lovex and thudnerstone

iceland: eirikur hauksson
they had the best song over all national selection with eldur
they had a chance to win the whole contest but they choose an overaged wannabe rocker

just denmark makes me happy
my favourite with ireland for now

Good song, but I still would prefer Jonsi's song. After Charizma's flop in Polonia, it seems the best songs are being left behind...

And here a poetic Turkish version.. just adorable..

Senin avuçlarinda okudum

Senin avuçlarinda okudum, o iyi saklanmis sirri
Simdi goruyorum, biliyor ve anliyorum
O kadar çok sey var ki sana feda edebilecegim
Evet, guzel hayat ask ve sicaklik dolu

Senin avuçlarinda okudum
Hayatin bana ogretebileceklerini
Hiç bana yetmiyor
Seninle ozgurce yasamak istiyorum
Denizler ve kitalar uzerinden uçmak istiyorum

Oyle gorunuyor ki her ruya gerçeklesiyor
Biz ikimiz gidecegiz, okyanuslar ve ulkeler uzerinden
Hayat ile oyunuyoruz ve avuçlarimiz birlesiyor
Ve sonra ellerimizi tutuyoruz
Evet, elele

Senin avuçlarinda okudum
Hayatin bana ogretebileceklerini
Hiç bana yetimiyor
Seninle ozgurce yasamak istiyorum
Denizler ve kitalar uzerinden uçmak istiyorum

Butun istikamet boyunca gidecegim
Huzun ve umutsuzluga karsi askla
Hiç bana yetmiyor
Seninle ozgurce yurumek istiyorum
Denizlerin ve kitalar uzerinen uçmak istiyorum

Senin avuçlarinda okudum
Hayatin bana ogretebileceklerini
Hiç bana yetimiyor
Seninle ozgurce yasamak istiyorum

Denizlerin ve kitalar uzerinden uçmak
Senin avuçlarinda okudum
Hayatin bana ogretebileceklerini
Hiç bana yetimiyor
Seninle ozgurce yasamak istiyorum

Denizlerin ve kitalar uzerinden uçmak
Senin avuçlarinda okudum
Hayatin bana ogretebileceklerini
Hiç bana yetimiyor
Seninle ozgurce yasamak istiyorum
Denizlerin ve kitalar uzerinden uçmak

°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°

Ég les í lófa þínum
Ég les í lófa þínum, leyndarmálið góða
Ég sé það nú, ég veit og skil
Það er svo ótalmargt sem ætla ég að bjóða
Já, betra líf, með ást og yl

Í lófa þínum les ég það
Að lífið geti kennt mér að
Ég fæ aldrei nóg
Ég vil fara frjáls með þér
Og fljúga yfir land og sjó

Það er svo augljóst nú að allir draumar rætast
Við höldum tvö, um höf og lönd
Um lífið leikum við og lófar okkar mætast
Þá leiðumst við
Já, hönd í hönd

Í lófa þínum les ég það
Að lífið geti kennt mér að
Ég fæ aldrei nóg
Ég vil fara frjáls með þér
Og fljúga yfir land og sjó

Ég ætla að fara alla leið
Með ást á móti sorg og neyð
Ég fæ aldrei nóg
Ég vil fara frjáls með þér
Og fljúga yfir land og sjó

Í lófa þínum les ég það
Að lífið geti kennt mér að
Ég fæ aldrei nóg
Ég vil fara frjáls með þér
Og fljúga yfir land og sjó

Ég ætla að fara alla leið
Með ást á móti sorg og neyð
Ég fæ aldrei nóg
Ég vil fara frjáls með þér
Og fljúga yfir land og sjó

***********************************************

I read from your handpalm

I read from your palm, the good secret,
I see it now, I know and understand.
There are so many things I am gonna offer,
yes, better life, with love and warmth.

In your palm I read it
that life can teach me that
I never get enough.
I want to go with you freely
and fly above land and sea.

It so obvious now that every dream comes true
We go two together, over oceans and land.
We play with life and our palms meet
Then we holds hands,
yes, hand to hand.

In your palm I read it
that life can teach me that
I never get enough.
I want to go with you freely
and fly above land and sea.

I'm gonna go all the way
With love against sorrow and despair
I never get enough.
I want to go with you freely
and fly above land and sea.

In your palm I read it
that life can teach me that
I never get enough.
I want to go with you freely
and fly above land and sea.

I'm gonna go all the way
With love against sorrow and despair
I never get enough.
I want to go with you freely
and fly above land and sea.
