l'eurovision ŕ la française
France: Lyrics and first reactions
Eurovision keeps a low place in the French media and the choice of the song has not aroused many reactions yet. The reactions of the big French newspapers and TV stations remained very shy. Even though the France 3 realized a modest record of audience last Tuesday with around 2 millions of viewers, the national final will be remembered as the beginning of a new approach to the Eurovision Song Contest in France.
The French public also stays, once again, reserved about the choice of the song. Eurovision Song Contest has lost the credibility in a country without a win in 30 years. After the new kind of selection format, the channel did unfortunately not convince the majority of the viewers. But we can note some better comments about the French event:
“France finally left its own vision of the Contest. The channel offered the candidates the chance to suggest different kinds of songs, whereas in the last years, we were all the time represented by typical French ballads. The success couldn’t be as strong as this year”
As for the fans, they expressed a real passion for the quality of the songs this year, and particularly for the victory of l’amour à la française. “France did the best choice after a great match between les Fatals and Medi-T. I salute France 3 for the show. France has won a credibility in Europe and into the esc world”.
The language of the song seems to be one the reasons for the victory of Les Fatals Picards. “It’s the first time that France tried to leave its own language in Eurovision. The lyrics are not in French, nor in English, but in “franglish”. They are ironical and can be understood by all Europe”.
THE LYRICS IN FULL
I remember, jolie demoiselle
The last summer, nous, la tour Eiffel
I remember comme tu étais belle
So beautiful with your sac Chanel
Sur les ponts de la Seine
Let's do it again, again, again, again
You gave me a rendezvous
What is it, what is it?
Je le chercher à toi, dans les rues
Je ne suis pas venir car tu ne l'es plus
Je le regarde partout, where are you?
My heart is bleeding, oh I miss you
L'amour à la française
Let's do it again, again, again, again
You gave me a rendezvous
Et je cours, je cours, je cours
I've lost l'amour, l'amour, l'amour
Je suis perdu, here without you
And I'm crazy, seul à Paris
Je, tu le manque, sans toi I can't
Et sous la pluie, I feel sorry
Champs-Élysées, alone, la nuit
Le Moulin Rouge, I feel guilty
Et le soleil est plus brûlant que les oiseaux
Et dans le ciel, I miss you so
A souvenir, a rendezvous
Des fleurs, des fleurs, des fleurs for you
Je, tu le manque, sans toi I can't
Et sous la pluie, I feel sorry
Je suis perdu, here without you
And I'm crazy, seul à Paris
I remember, jolie demoiselle
The last summer, comme tu étais belle
I remember, nous, la Tour Eiffel
So beautiful with your sac Chanel
L'amour à la française
C'est que je t'aime, je t'aime, je t'aime, je t'aime
I give you a rendezvous
Et je cours, je cours, je cours
I've lost l'amour, l'amour, l'amour
Je suis perdu, here without you
And I'm crazy, seul à Paris
Je, tu le manque, sans toi I can't
Sous la pluie, I feel sorry
Champs-Elysées, alone, la nuit
Le Moulin Rouge, I feel guilty
Et le soleil est plus brûlant que les oiseaux
Et dans le ciel, I miss you so
A souvenir, a rendezvous
Des fleurs, des fleurs, des fleurs for you
Je tu le manque, sans toi I can't
Et sous la pluie, I feel sorry
Je suis perdu, here without you

This is so cool! Verrrrrry different for a French entry, I was so surprised when I heard this. I hope they do well, I love this entry, very quirky!
That's not a bad choice. I think Les Fatals Picards can make it this year, even if their entry is far from being as beautiful as "Le dernier qui a parlé" (we still should have won that year, in 1991).
Today the videos of Greece, Sweden, France, Russia and Germany in:

SEE YOU IN 2008 TURKEY / IZMIR
I loved the song from the first time I heard '"et je cours, je cours, je cours, I've lost l'amour, l'amour, l'amour, je suis perdu here without you"... brilliant !
... last year I thought Silvia Night was brilliant...
oh well...
At least Les Fatals Picards are getting many reactions !!!
Don't forget, music is also for FUN !!! ESC is a nice way to spend a nice evening with friends... and have fun !!!
Paris-Bercy 2008 ? This would be SO funny ! Vive le Frenglish !
Of course the singer does not speak English properly and sings a bit out of tune. That is an obviously deliberate part of the fun! Personally I preferred Charlotte Becquin who tends to shout a bit in the loud parts but had the most original and committed song, or even the "ultrablond" Estelle Lemée whose entry was supremely kitsch but, I thought, strangely good, refreshing and enticing in its own impossible style. However, if we cannot do "L'oiseau et l'enfant" or "C'est le dernier qui a parlé qui a raison" again, then why not les Fatals Picards. Medi T was ok but not striking enough, too amateurish - there are better bands in the same style.
It's ok.
Much better than last year.
Good luck!
Personally, I prefere MEDI T because the song is more rytmic and also it´s easy to keep the melody.
NEXT CONTEST, MADRID 2008 GO SPAIN
so bad ! sorry
Fabrice
You better get the salt and pepper out, cos your ass may get fried!
well...I'll eat my arse if it ends up in the bottom 4!!!! and that's a promise!! lol
come on....some of you are taking this so seriously that it's almost PATHETIC .....or maybe you think you have got "la science infuse"!!!
It's fun!!
It reminds me of how the French are speaking English down here and the English French!
It's sung in FRANGLAIS....If it wins this should be the new European language standard.
Defenitely refreshing and I'm glad France finaly took the effort of 'doing something about Eurovision' !!
France has always been one of my favourite ESC countries; from "White and Black Blues" to "C'est le dernier.." which was BLATANTLY robbed in 1991 to "Monté la Rivié", to so many recent entries, including the magnificent "Je n'ai que mon ame" and "Il faut du temps". Oh my God, there are just too many! I've always loved the fact that France has continued to sing in French and despite the nervous performance, last year's song was beautiful I thought. But full marks to France for giving the "Franglish" thing a go! I'd also love to see the UK send a Gaelic or Welsh song to Eurovision...
Allez la France!
LEE
Well, this is the end of an era for France. My country has finally given up its traditional ballads and its beautiful language to the overall trend of kitchy english song in the contest. I am kind of sad because I was proud that France sent something "different" so that Europe could get a little break from Swedish synthetic pop and other "Moldova 2005/Lithuania 2006"-style songs, even if mainstream Europe did not vote a lot for us.
But anyway, "Les Fatals Picards" seems to fit the Eurovision style of the moment: not lyrically outstanding from a classical point of view and lots of (unnecessary) visual effects, goofs and other gimmicks so that people don't fall asleep and remember the song when it's time to vote.
At the end, France 3 decided it was time to sacrifice our long national traditions of beautiful, humble sleepy ballads for a couple of more points. Well, "C'est La Vie" as we say in France.
Let's hope for the best so we all can enjoy the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest this may in Helsinki, although the prospect of Scandinavian/Slavic-Balkanic/Greek-Cyprus televoting already makes me lose my prospect to see France win its first title in 30 years now. But you never know: if Lordi was able to win it so can we!

Good but not really my cup of tea. France used to have the most gorgeous song until a few years ago. I miss them.
This song can work or it can fail tremendously. Impossible to predict.
Bonne chance!!
This is cult!
First time for a long time, the french love their entry, it's already a miracle!
Because we use to be very non-eurovision, but now it's a new revolution.
I thank Bruno Berberes for making Eurovision something special in France, like
it used to be years before
i DON'T LIKE IT !!!! I AGree with you Peter E !!!
Heine, do you have other words in your vocabulary than "shit"?
If we end up in the bottom five, maybe we'll be with Denmark... but for that your country needs to qualify for the final.. and obviously, it won't be with my vote...
I love this song. I said earlier in one of my comments that while listening to this year's entries (which mostly suck, by the way), this was the first one that made me decide to actually vote for it. I'm not so sure about the combination of French and English, but it's a nice change
Really lovely song. Well done France.
@Oliver
Is it really true about the voting system? It's such a shame and very unfair. Something must be done about it in the future. Haven't heard the other French entries so I really wouldn't know if there was any better than this. Still, I love this song and will vote for it.
Good luck France!
Greetings from Bosnia

6-Greece
7-Andorra
8-Denmark
9-Bulgaria
10-Spain
followed by many other good songs.........
This is the best entry so far, and I doubt there will be any song better than this!
France made the right choice. After lots of traditional chansons in the 60s and 70s,
they were almost the only ones bringing something new to ESC in the 80s and 90s.
This one is pure pleasure, fresh................the best one!
I hope for a good show, you can do a lot of it.
THIS WILL SMASH ALL ENTRIES........
Even though I liked the song, I am disappointed by 2 things:
1/ The singer sings with a british accent but it's all fake since he's french and can't even speak English correctly. So it's a bit stupid to me. And most of all, during the live show, he sang OUT OF KEY and if during the interview for this site, the bald guy seemed cool and nice, the main fake singer seemed like a total jerk - not even funny!!!!!
2/ I am very surrpised NOBODY said anything about the votes! Viewers could vote from the begiining of the show, which means that the first songs got obviously more chances to be picked up than the last ones. So, if the first songs could get 2 hours worth of votes, the last candidate, Estelle Lemée could only get 10 minutes worth of votes!!! Of course, people could vote for her before, but who could vote for a song they haven't listened to? And also, what was the part of the "JURY"'s vote in the final decision? Once again, everything was a blur and I do suspect the decision was already made BEFORE the show itself. Not very fair I'm afraid.
How well the song will do at the contest? It'll all depend on how good the band sing. And if they can't even sing right in front of a limited audience, we can imagine the worst in from of a huge crowd. Anyway, we'll see!
Olivier ;-)
.....really interesting entry for France this year....Do I like it? I am not so sure yet. It is funny in a way and the ironic statements are good.....I am sure that will appeal to lots of voters because it is so unique. Not so sure that it will get to top 5....but probably better that oher years.
