Paddy Power: Israel and Germany are favourites

Earlier today, esctoday.com published the first betting odds offered for the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest. This afternoon, Paddy Power became the second company to open the books on the competition. They are offering odds on four countries, their key market countries of Ireland and the United Kingdom, and they are taking bets on their perceived favourites: Israel and Germany.

Whilst Betfair have the Swedish band, The Ark as favourites to win, Paddy Power have declared their early favourites to be the anti-nuclear weapon entry from Israel and the pure jazz sound from Germany. Both countries are being offered 10/1 odds for victory.

Paddy Power have opened the books on a win for the United Kingdom's Scooch at 16/1 and their homeland entry, Dervish from Ireland is ranked at 18/1. William Hill have not updated the United Kingdom odds on victory from 20/1, which was in place before the national final on Saturday.

"This afternoon, Paddy Power became the second company to open the books on the competition. They are offering odds on four countries, their key market countries of Ireland and the United Kingdom, and they are taking bets on their perceived favourites: Israel and Germany."

Barry, this is absolute rubbish. Paddy Power have been offering odds on these four countries for quite a while; at least a week, possibly two. Even before that they were offering odds on the UK and Ireland only, long before the UK chose the song. This is shamefully inaccurate reporting.

@ Melina
In general, I appreciate your comments...
but you have sometimes a behaviour which makes me feel that you think that you have eaten wisdom with a dipper...
if YOU think the German song is boring, then please write: "In my opinion" or "I think" or make clear in some way that this is your opinion...
IMO the German song is not at all boring, IMO the Finnish song for example is boring...

POLLS at this stage don't reflect the acual favourites to WIN.

Hope ESC 2008 will go back down to the MEDITERRANEAN>>>>>to that country which SURPRISE every year from very GOOD results and bottom place in the FINAL.
It's success is pretty known:

1992
1998
2002
2005
2007...?

MALTA stand a GREAT chance to WIN...it will be a great emotion if MALTA PASS and make it to the TOP 10 at least...MALTA is the smallest island competing in ESC for 20 year...coincidence or not VERTIGO will be spot number 20.

GOODLUCK TO ALL COUNTRIES HOPE A NEW COUNTRY WIN THEESC.

Germany is one of my favs I think Roger will do a great job on the night. Not a fan of Israel to qualify. when will Paddy power offer odds on all countries like in previous years?

Just remember that Ireland gave 12points to Lithuania last year. Push The Button has gotten media attention in Ireland because it is about nuclear annialation. I wouldn't be surprised if Ireland voted highly for it...

Israel? My ears hurt when listening to it. A real dissapointment from them this year, as I usually like Israeli entries. Germany on the other hand I can fully appreciate; not a great lover of jazz and big-band music, but a very class act. Should do extremely well after last years fiasco (Germany, you were robbed!)

I can´t understand that are people here who like the Israelian entry! I mean: It sounds like a remix of three completely different horrible songs and the result is the worst song in ESC - together with Lithuania last year. But I´ve never thought that this "We are the winners" could be "topped", but Israel shows, that it´s possible.

Shiri, where are you?

Israel, please stay in the semi and make place for quality-songs!!!

Both Israel and Germany are the kind of song you either love or hate. I don't think any of them is going to win, although I would love to see the German song winning the ESC. As for Israel, sorry, I do not like the song at all.

yes. I'm sure that Israel will go to the final. Very good song :)

Germany really was a pleasant surprise - i like most things that aren't too middle of the road (except drag queens that is - they're becoming a cliche onto themselves). And yes, i'm fully aware that my country is sending about the most average song you can think of, so thank god we have a good singer. Anyway - Germany. Is very good, think they could really have something here. After Texas Lightning another colourful addition to the contest.

However - vote for Georgia, Bosnia or Ireland, or the Netherlands of course, if you'd be so kind :)

Grüezi mit dem hand!

if there'd be a revival of more folkloristic tune like in the first half of the 1990s, I'd put my bet on Ireland, but barring that, I suppose Danniela could be right, especially as since 2001, only countries in the eastern half of europe have won the contest (three times north-easterns counties, twice south-eastern, plus three times former soviet republics). How about Georgia? Apart from the former USSR, I think it could be the year for Bosnia to win after placing second last year, even though I think last year's entry was stronger.

@ Molly Parton: glad you agree ;), but I didn't mean the language - I don't mind singing in German at all, it's just that this particular song is very boring. (It's funny, as for some people "quality" seems to equal boring... ;) I don't agree...)

@ Mystic: Portugal's song is ok, but I'll be very surprised if it makes it to the final, especially as it's so similar to Norway's, so the votes will be divided between the two...

Ramón Ramos [16974]

I agree that Israel can win or get a top 5 position, not Germany. The German song will be well appreciated by swing fans, but not by the general viewers. However, my favourite to win is SWITZERLAND. A Swiss victory will give importance to the ESC results this year.
