Sunday nationwide demonstrations

Ukrainian nationalists strike Verka

It seems that the anti-Verka commotion just won’t die down in Ukraine. BBC reports that this past Sunday angry Ukrainian nationalists held protests all over the country against Verka’s entry in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Verka Serduchka aka performer Andriy Mykhailovych Danylk was clearly selected by the Ukrainian public by jury vote and televote. Since then reactions have been mixed in Ukraine. Although Verka is a well-loved stage figure at home and in other former Soviet states, there are some who claim that she is the “grotesque stereotype of a stupid Ukrainian villager” who will eventually damage the country’s image abroad.

Yesterday, nationalists held a series of demonstrations across the country to put pressure on the government and broadcaster to withdraw Verka’s entry from the contest. They organised theatrical shows and collected signatures for a petition. As there are quite a few that believe that Verka could even actually win the contest once more for Ukraine, it is not likely that the '  protests will find an understanding ear. So far, all the noise seems to be working to Verka’s advantage, keeping her in the headlines of the media around the world.

ok... it was very bad... But it's amusing, any way.

Peolple, enjoy the contest, have fun... ;)
About Sean, he'd have sounded arrogant if that wasn't supposed to be funny. And it was! I enjoyed it, it made me smile. Besides, it's his opinion, ok? Chill out.
Concerning Ukraine... Well, actually I haven't listened to the song yet... :) I'll tell you right away...

If Verka is trying to copy SIlvía Night... he/she would do it better in Asiavision. Silvía Night is simply amazing and unrepeteable, and if she didn't pass to the Final, I can't see a reason for considering Verka a winner, a top 5, a top 10 or even a top 15...

A communist star in his/her head? Come on..!

Aha... To dance or not to dance
I want to see
Aha... It's not a question
I want to see
Aha... Don't live to dance
I want to see
Dance to live
Aha...
I love you

@ Molly Parton

You and a few others ...gary chelsea in particular..seem to think ye are somehow the unofficial queens of this site. Lets be honest Molly you partial to the odd caustic, cruel remark and comment yourself........ I quite entitled to express my views on here. And I think my summary of this years songs is funny and I spent quite a bit of time putting it together....... oh and i a serial pill popper so sleeping pills have little effect at this stage......

Kirill

Everyone all over Europe loves this Ukraine song - except those people in Ukraine. Oh, and Sean Kehoe, but you can live with that. He has to live with his horrible Irish song.

Europe you all should perceive Verka Serduchka as part of hospitality and joy of Ukraine! Ruslana was wild, Greenjolly - politic, Tina - romantic and strong voice & Verka - joyful and a little crazy part of Ukraine! It's different! I mean Ukraine!

Peace! :-)

Verka is cool!
ESC needs acts like that, if all those 42 songs were ballads and abba-pop, that would make a rather boring show... zzzzzz.. Only lack of humour and conservatism would "destroy" ESC.
Seems like many Swedes here don't like Verka's style - to my eyes The
Ark's look is only one step from her :)
P.S I'm old Ark fan but I hoped something better from them in ESC.

It's part of a democracy. Verka was chosen by the majority of Ukrainians, but there are people that don't like the character, well, they also have the right to react against her. This is good, not because they are rejecting the song and performer that was elected, but because this means there is a strong democracy in the Ukraine and everybody can express their points of view freely. There will always be people for and against evrything, however unreasonable either position may seem to us. I guess it's Verka who is winning a lot of publicity with this...

Just let Verka perform and that's all, if Ukraine didn't like him, it shouldn't have chosen hime in the first place

Some people are badly in need of a Sense-of-humour Enema.

Verka is great, and his/her song is upbeat and refreshing. Any country that puts forward a performer like Verka for Eurovision must have a lot of self-confidence. It doesn't belittle Ukraine in any way, just the opposite in fact. It shows the world that here is a country that can chill out, be silly once in a while, and enjoy itself.

Just be thankful you don't live in the UK and have Scooch representing you with their witless 'double entendres'. That really is something to protest about.

It's just a funny performance of an actor who obviously enjoys in the role of Verka, nothing to be ashamed of. Eurosong contest needs something extraordinary every year, in 2002 were Sestre, then 2003 Alf Poier, last year Sylvia Night, otherwise it would be really boring. If most of people in Ukraine voted for Verka, they have a right to see her performing in Helsinki.

Verka, DQ, Sestre, Dana Int., Lordi

@ Peter Eriksson

So you consider that because the fact that they're drags or transexual, or another kind of music away from the Swedish ABBA stereotype in ESC they're not serious? Let me say you are very simple guy.

By the way, this Verka... does he have the communist star upon his head? He should take care of this.

and your comment wasnt tongue in cheeck you likened him to a chernobyl survivor its ok to be non pc but its morally wrong to make fun of people injured by something that they had no control of whatsoever, these people are dying slow and painful deaths yet you feel they are fair game for jokes
