For all Delegates

Sibelius Concert by RSO

A tour programme of concerts and excursions has been scheduled for the duration of the Eurovision Song Contest for the delegations of the participating countries. One very special event delegates can look forward to is a Sibelius Concert by the Finnish Radio Symphony (RSO). This concert is different from the other concerts put in the programme as it offers a interesting alternative to 'popular music'.

This concert will include  Jean Sibelius’s famous Violin Concerto, an icon of Finnish music, and the maritime-themed symphonic poem The Oceanides.   The rest of the programme consists of Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose series and Claude Debussy’s La mer. The conductor is RSO’s Principal Conductor Sakari Oramo, and the solo violinist is Lisa Batiashvili.

The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra is an internationally acclaimed top-ranking Finnish orchestra. Its director Sakari Oramo, is one of Finland’s most successful conductors and  a regular visiting conductor at the Berlin and New York Philharmonics. The concert’s soloist is internationally distinguished Georgian-German violinist Lisa Batiashvili, who, among other achievements, won the VII International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition in 1996 at the age of 16.

Jean Sibelius is one of Finland's most famous composers, and many in the music industry might have heard of the Microsoft Sibelius programme, used to write music on the computer. If you are going to Helsinki for the contest, a place you might want to visit is the Sibelius monument in Sibelius park, near the centre of the city.

Sibelius and Lordi, both comes from the same country.

we both love Verka from Ukraine, and Debussy. thats what is great about the Euro fans, taste for everything! be it refined art or be it pop and fun.

Now all they have to do is put the orchestra back in the ESC hall.

Try Sibelius' Symphony No. 6 IV: Allegro Molto. Wonderful piece of music! Congratulations Helsinki for providing a proper cultural programme - and not just last year's winner in a dodgy bar somewhere. Israel provided some great cultural highlights in 1999 and staged a wonderful welcome part at the Israel Museum overlooking Jerusalem. Wonderful food and drink. Very memorable. Birmingham's cultural programme? Watching Ireland's Dawn Martin having a swearing fit in the presence of the Lord Mayor . . .

Sibelius is one of the greatest classic composers and CONGRATULATIONS to Finland for that.
Seems that we forgot a tribut to our major classical composer Nikos Skalkottas last year, oh yes Anna was first priority...Sometimes we are so...pathetic....

Sounds great... I much appreciated the tour of the islands provided to the delegates by Greece last year. It'll be nice to get away from the dress rehearsals to some class.

Just a shame they have chesen La Mer rather than La Cathédrale Engloutie, an all time favourite of mine.

I wish I could be there. I love Debussy and Sibelius.

Wow, Debussy and Ravel - wooo hooo! Great stuff, thumbs up.

"Finlandia" should have been performed also.

Everything is telling us that the upcoming contest will be a good one.
