Sexy show planned for Netherlands
Edsilia interview: Making more of it
So firstly, the big question: why has Edsilia not embarked upon the kind of mammoth tour of Europe which 2006 Dutch hopefuls Treble undertook? "We wanted to make use of this time to arrange everything well for Finland", she explains. "I want to give my all in Finland, and maybe there we'll do more promotion as it will be the centre of everything."
Making more of it
Instead of travelling the continent, Dutch concentration has been centred on preparations and rehearsals. The choreography for the song is complete, and intensive rehearsals are already well underway for an unforgettable Dutch show. Edsilia pointed out that Dutch entries to date have been lacking something of the 'show' ingredient, and this year the team are set to change all that. "We had a couple of 'shows', but not really 'show' shows. Now we're making a little bit more of it. Not too much - we haven't had much time or money, but we're trying to make the best with the little that we have." To perform the show, Edsilia's dress is being designed especially for the contest, although the designer will not be able to accompany the team to Finland.
Handsome - sexy - gosh!
There will be four female dancers and one "handsome, sexy - gosh!" guy on stage with Edsilia - "I wish we had more", she explains, feeling a little limited by the six-on-stage rule. She will, however, be taking a very active role herself, and fans can expect quite an energetic display.
The fact that this year will include a semifinal makes it a very different experience for Edsilia. Although she came fourth at the 1998 contest, she assures fans that there is no extra pressure this year. "That's there - that's in my pocket, no one can take it away from me. It's printed in the books! This is new, that was nine years ago." She does admit that the goals of competitors have changed since then: "Nine years ago, the goal was to get in the top five, but now the goal is to get to the final. In Holland, we're getting a little depressed as we're not scoring that well!"
A Eurovision thang
The Netherlands' entry was touch-and-go for a while, after a string of bitter disappointments in recent years, and Edsilia jumped at the chance to keep the Dutch ball rolling. "I was in a good mood when they asked me and I said 'let's go for it!'. They almost didn't send anyone as they were a little sad about everything. I said no - we have to do this thing, it's a Eurovision thing - it's about bonding!"
So what about the competition? "I've seen everything once - all 42 songs!" she explains, but admits that it's a little difficult to remember everything after a single listen. "But I'll check it all out when I'm in Finland. I heard a lot of good songs, so it's going to be tough. I heard a lot of rock music, but not a real pop song. And that's what we've got - a real pop song."
Edsilia treated the team to an open-air, acapella version of her entry On Top of the World before concluding the interview. You can watch it for yourself below, and read more about the event at partner sites belgovision.com and 12points.tv .

Come on! We can qualify! Lets do it!
@ Djamila & Richard
IMO both of you are partly right. But remember ESC is a song competition. So, don’t you think that we “hard core fans” should stay as an example and should not start political discussions on this board? If there is a message about something political we might all give our opinion about that but if the messages are about the songs, artists, music etc. we should stay on topic.
Same to a lot of others who are always writing one senseless sentence and than again again and again give their “top 5”. I think if people are interested in your personal ranking: write it into your profile and people will have a look if they are interested.
I am really getting a bit boared with all those reactions that are completely out of topic.
Edsilia is so nice, it's a pity they didn't write a better song for her.
Richard: Your hypocracy is annoying. I said something that I don't even consider to be racist - I compared Edsilia to Whitney Houston, what's the big deal?
You, on the other hand, are judging me because of "someone from my country" you met who was racist... lol Well, okay. Go right ahead. You can be as prejudiced as you want. I, on the other hand, can truly say I don't hate everyone in any group - and if I did, black people wouldn't exactly top the list. I've got more than enough enemies from people who are the same race and speak more or less the same language as I do.
Hi Dlamila,
I am sorry if I upset you. I was only giving some facts, that never got spoken about. Your reaction is quite honest. It does not make me feel good though.
After reading your reaction, I will invest some time in real statistics and put them on this site or on my blog. btw, my eyes were opened by an immigrant in Holland from your country. He was very denigrating to some people who walked by. That is when I had to say that the friendship stopped there. So much fear in that statement, because of a color. He did not go for the Nobel price. I live in the US, you would get sued for your remarks here. But that is the good thing on the free part of Europe, you can say what you want to say.
Well said, Edsilia: The main reason for me to watch the Eurovision Song Contest is to get the chance to listen to pop music because that's what I like.
I hope Europe votes "On Top Of The World" and make it get through!!!
djamila i thought whitney houston was white, or at least just under her nose looks sort of white ! maybe its talcum powder
good luck netherlands, i think she will do much better than people think, a great singer that can really sell a song, hope she gets top ten

@ Richard: I don't think Eastern Europe is any more racist than the West, we're just more open about it. Look at France, for example - they might not make monkey noises at black players on the football field but they'd appear to have a far more serious problem with racism than does Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sure you have countries like Russia where skinheads are so common that universities warn non-white students to stay in their dorms - but that's specific to Russia. The truth is we just don't have the experience of different races so we haven't had time to push our racism into the abstract as has been done in the West.
We shout racial insults at football games, you do studies to show how non-whites are half as likely to get job applications answered, to get the good apartments, blah blah blah.
I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen a black person in real life. The only black person I've ever spoken to face to face was Danijela Mijatovic:

As for Edsilia and Whitney Houston... you really don't think that's a normal comparrison to make? You really think saying she's just another Whitney copy is racist? That's foolishness - liberal paranoia. If she was white I'd compare her to Celine Dion, if she was Yugoslav I'd compare her to Tereza - whatever.
Djamila, where are you from?
I know it is not politically correct, but check the points given by former central/eastern countries to artists with different than caucasian color. The nations in Western Europe are mixed societies, unlike those countries. It is astonishing to see the effect. Check the facts yourself. Why they always refer to Whitney Houson once the artists are colored? I do not like to judge it, but hope you will look into yourself and ask that question.
