Roger Cicero: 'last chorus in English'

The German entry this year seems not to be completely in German as first assumed. In an interview with our Danish partner site esconnet.dk Roger Cicero reveals that the last chorus of Frauen regier’n die welt will be sung in English at the Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki.

In the interview published today Roger Cicero talks about what made him participant in the German final, his view on the contest and his plans for the future. When asked what made him sing in German he answers: It is a part of me and I think it will be too ordinary just to sing the whole song in English. I will be singing the last chorus in English though to give people an idea about what I am singing.

As esctoday.com reported FYR Macedonia was initially turned down in their request to sing in English as they applied too late but the decision was changed today to allow the final choruses to be sung in English. At the moment we don’t know if Roger Cicero did apply in time, as there has been no other information regarding this available.

Germany is, as a so-called Big4 country automatically qualified for the final 12th of May in Helsinki.

For me, this is one of this years best songs. Besides Sweden, Finland, Belarus and a few others this is really, really, really a great song and it sounds so good to me. I really like the voice of Roger Cicero as well, and he pulls off one of the most difficoult tasks ever: To sing German in a sexy, cool and sing-able way. What a man. I am weak as spaghetti!

Thank you very much Mr.Vertigo, that sounds brilliant. Would you let me crash out at yours? Either that or the generator hostel again (fantastic place btw)

@ Melina
Of course, it's all up to everyone's taste.
And I'm totally with you that Lordi deserved their victory last year absolutely (this is also a single opinion - mine).
But I disagree with you about the German entries of the recent two years. About Texas Lightning: You described in a very nice way how you were enlightened of the Finnish victory. Well, in the same way I was excited with Texas Lightning and I knew, my whole country crossed the fingers like me on this evening. We sent an actual number one of the German charts and it ended up at number 15. And we kept on partying despite of this.
Concerning Roger Cicero: You seem to like talking about majorities. Well, perhaps you should read the reactions which were posted to this article. Except you (and garry chelsea) there were nobody who criticised the German entry. Quite the contrary. So perhaps it's not you who ate wisedom with a dipper... ;)

I really want Germany to do well this song is classy and so nice to listen to, I think the introduction of English will give it a better advantage, go Roger!!!!

@William FRancis:
since i see that you have a good taste, you could be my guest in Berlin, i watched last conteast here and i will watch this one here and possibly the next one, 'caus i have been living here for many years(i am not a german though!)

@Melina:
our "bitching" goes against Lordi and not against Finnland...I am always happy when a country that had never won the competition wins for the very first time, and i can understand you, because that is the way me and many other greeks felt back then in 2005.....but for me and many other the song and all these over the top gimmicks and costumes were neither funny, not artistically good.....and the song was terrible: a pseudo hard rock anthem who actually was pissing off hard rock itself....for me such an entry should never win..and this has nothing to do with conservatism(i guarantee you, i am everything but conservative in my life), it has to do with some respect to other artists and entries who try hard to present something good artistically and musically..

I think that's a good thing. Not many people in Europe know German and this song lifes from it's lyrics. They are soo funny. everybody sould understand them....

John

Well it's going to lose a lot of it's class if he desparately clunks into English at the end. Edith Piaf never went NON, JE NE REGRETTE NOTHING.

It may not win him points, but it won't do him any harm either. The German song is one of the classiest this year and deserves to do well, whether it's sung in English or in German.

I hope Roger doesn't think he has to sing in english to win points - the song's great as it is. It'll be nice to hear a different version on the night, but a German lounge singer with an old school eurovision entry simply has class.

So what are the chances of the UK entering a song in German? It's not very likely is it?

Molly Parton [29330]
Wed 25 Apr 2007 16:54:15

I have a feeling it wouldn't just be ordinary if it was all sung in English; it would be rubbish because the German is superb and the English is unlikely to be.

Molly Parton [29330]

Yes but what is the English lyric?

Melina I'm afraid I'm totally with Benji on this....Lordi is really and truly something I'd rather forget asap. I'm very happy for Finland to have actually won at last, but I'd rather it didn't happen with this particular number....

As for the German song, I'll say it again: I'm glad it's jazzy and swingey, some FINE MUSIC at last, as opposed to monosyllabic dribble and circus acts most commonly inflicted upon us in recent years, all in all....having said that, I'll admit I have a secret sneaky admiration for Verka, hehe....you can't resist it for too long, trust me I've tried....

@ benji zagreb, well, the majority of Europeans disagree with you there... ;)
Of course you are entitled to your opinion, but don't say it like it was some kind of absolute truth!

And as for those who hope it will soon be forgotten, I say you hope in vain... And I for one will never, never, ever forget how happy & excited I was when they won, even when it began to look possible that they might win... I had not dared to hope such a thing, considering the conservative taste on many ESC viewers... But it was an impossible dream come true!! :)

So can all those negative people please stop bitchng about it... Soon you will have a new winner to bitch about, I'm sure (nothing new under the sun) ;)

so william you think that a frank sinatra wannabe with a song that sounds like it came from the 50s is new for eurovision

I was in Berlin on the day of the German final (in Hamberg), and I think there is genuine interest in eurovision there. I would love to return to see the contest there next year! And I think this song sounds fantastic in German (cool accent!), it is somthing fresh and new (for eurovision), especally with air stwerdesses, vampires, drag queens and wannabe rockers!

@melina

Lordi didn't have the best performance and especially not the best song last year.
A lot of Finnish entries were my favourites and I would have been very glad that Finland won if it hadn't been in 2006 with Lordi.

Your 1975 entry is amazing! I really cannot understand why was SOOOOOOOO underrated then!!!!

Not my style, but definitely a quality song. I like when a country experiments with something different (but I don't think this will have a very broad appeal - sorry :( ).

Maybe it's because I am German : I really love this song. And I think that it is a rather good idea to sing a bit of the song in english. Because like this people will maybe get a bit of what the song is about. "Non german" friends always tell me that our language sounds so strange and hard to them and doesn't fit pop music... Probably it's right. I really love Roger's entry but I think it will end up even worth than Texas Lightning :-( But I do not care because this year we have an entry I do not have be ashamed of at all. Good luck Roger!!!

EBU first said "no" to Karolina... I'm not sure Roger knows the rules... I think he's thinking to do it without ask to the EBU...

My top favorite song so far. This song talks about the real, pure music. For the first time, I loved German Language with this song, don't prefer to hear some English words though. Good Luck Roger!

Oh please, Nikolas Vertigo... We already know you hate Lordi, so no need to repeat that again & again ;) Ok?
They simply had the best song & perfomance last year, even if you try to deny it... Miles better than Texas Lightning, for example. And the Ukrainian "a great entry"? You're making me laugh :) That was more gimmicky than Lordi (short skirt & cossacks), and never should have got such a high position... But it's useless to go on arguing about these matters, so I'll leave it at that :)

@Melina:
i really do not remember, no matter hard i try the enries from Norway and Estonia last year...Amambada from Holland i still remember.....and texas ligtening i can still very well rememebr....anyway these were not the only songs that wre robbed in the last euroision contest..the whole contest and contestants were robbed by the gimmicks and the monkey singing of a pseudo hard-rock band in carneval costumes....and great entries like the bosnian, the russian, the ukrainian or the greek one....anyway that is past now,i hope after this years contest, everybody will forget Lordi and this painful ;-) experience..
