Drag queen drama is alive ... in Switzerland
This light-hearted story doesn't have a happy ending for Miss Emi John though. The Thai drag queen who lives in a suburb of Zurich was crushed, of course, when she found out that she would have to give her MIss Drag Queen Switzerland title to the Swiss postal worker performing in drag as Romy Travis. Yves Oppliger who is in charge of the pageant said that one of the German speaking judges had miscounted the score being awarded. "Sieben, sieben, ai lyu-lyu," perhaps?
The colourful Swiss folk and schlager entertainer Nella Martinetti sat on the pageant's judging panel, but Oppliger declined to say which of the jury members made the error.
Now the customary Eurovision Song Contest background: new winner Romy Travis has previously been spotted lipsynching many Eurovision Song Contest classics (both in and out of character) beside the bar in Pigalle - a tiny little schlager pub in the old town of Zurich.
After winning the Grand Prix der Volksmusik in 1986, Nella Martinetti went on to co-write Ne partez pas sans moi for Celine Dion who took it to the Eurovision Song Contest on Switzerland's behalf in 1988. Martinetti's song won the last Eurovision Song Contest trophy for Switzerland. The song was also selected by televoters as the 10th favorite Eurovision Song Contest song from the Contest's 50 year history during the Congratulations 50 Years Eurovision celebration broadcast from Copenhagen, Denmark.
Admittedly, this story coming out of Switzerland has almost nothing to do with the Song Contest.

How did Terry Wogan get on the jury of the Swiss Drag Queen Contest? That's just for the UK fans.
Also - By my calculations the Eurovision will be entirely populated by Drag Queens by the year 3021 - just wait, you'll see.
