Eurovision 2007: analysis of the semi final

The first big show of the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest has now passed and we finally now all the 24 countries that will compete in the final this Saturday. As always, we could see some surprises and some non-surprising qualifiers and that's why we offer you a close look on the results. With the 4th semi final, the statistics are getting more evident...

Once again: The following countries reached the final (starting position in brackets)

  • Belarus (3)
  • F.Y.R. Macedonia (6)
  • Slovenia (7)
  • Hungary (8)
  • Georgia (11)
  • Latvia (14)
  • Serbia (17)
  • Bulgaria (21)
  • Turkey (22)
  • Moldova (24)

Big Poll

For the third time in a row, the country that was predicted to come first in the Big Poll didn't reach the final, after Iceland in 2005 and Belgium last year, Malta was unlucky this year. Nevertheless, the predictions were not too bad since six out of ten countries were predicted right: Turkey, Serbia, F.Y.R. Macedonia, Belarus, Slovenia and Hungary. None of the countries that scored 'zero' moved forward.

Diaspora

The most obvious hint of diaspora voting might be the fact that not one (!) country from Western Europe reached the final. The biggest surprise might be that DJ BoBo from Switzerland, who was one of the favourites, didn't make. A Kate Ryan flashback?

Running order

For the 4th time in a row, the countries performed second and third (Israel and Cyprus) did not reach the final. For the second time, the song which was performed first, Bulgaria, made it. For the second time overall, the last country succeeded (Latvia).

Languages

Only five of the songs that reached the final were entirely performed in English (not counting the word shekerim in the Turkish song). Once again, it is shown that English is not always more succesful.

The same procedure as every year...

There are some unlucky countries that failed to qualify in every semi final broadcast so far: Andorra, Portugal and Estonia. Furthermore, Montenegro and the Czech Rpublic failed to qualify on their first attempt. On the other hand, F.Y.R. Macedonia has qualified on every occasion (although they always were out of the top10 in the final), furthermore Turkey will have been in every final since 2004 after Saturday's show.

There's a first (and last?) for everything

Serbia and Georgia have qualified with their first performance in the contest. For the first time since 2004, Malta, Croatia and Norway, which were always either directly qualified or survived the semis, won't be in the final. On the other hand, Slovenia and Belarus might be very happy right now since they reached the final for the first time since the semi final was introduced.

Nicky

You assume in your analysis that it is nationals of those western European states that are determining their votes.

Under televoting Turkey will get 12 points from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France FOR EVER because there are millions of Turks in these countries and they have more of an incentive to vote than native Germans as they can vote for their home country.

The same applies to other large national minorities e.g. Lithuanians in Ireland (12 pts two years in a row!), Romanians in Spain, Serbians in Austria etc etc

Disapora voting totally distorts the results and the rankings (all the western european songs in the bottom 8 - no way did Sweden Finland or Germany deserve that!).

Bring back juries in which only nationals of that country can be members for at least 50% of the scores. If Lithuanians in Lithuania cannot vote for the Lithuanian song then why should Lithuanians in Ireland be able to?

Frustrated! After all this fuss from certain countries about the procedure of voting I must comment that 4 countries in particular haven't such a right to complain, they qualify automatically and one in particular, even though e gave them our 12 points has redeculed the level of this contest to a British comedy. I know that if it weren't for the UK, Spain, Germany and France there would be no western country next year but seriously...none of them qualified so they r taking up places for the countries who have to compete to qualify.

Excuse me but i think u r forgetting MALTA is not a former ISSR country or Balcan or Baltic, We night be small and invisible on a map but we are here and have been bitten just as much as you with just 15 votes in the semifinals. It kinda makes me think how many countries didn't vote for us, including western ones.

The EBU should consider for 2 semi finals to distribute the voting more evenly across Europe.
Im not talking about one for the East and one for the West.
(this would be unfaire too)
I m talking about two semi finals (randomly selected counties).
10 countries qualifying from each, and viewers only voting in their semi final.
What do you think about that???

Eurovision is dead
East votes always East
TELEVOTING is BAD and UNFAIR !!!

No matter how much we say the voting system was not fair, they will not change it becasue they are probably making too much money out of it. The results were crazy, and now many will not bother voting for some good songs from the East. Its gone. East votes East always, and now West must do the same.

I'd liked if CYPRUS , ICELAND and ANDORA had pass instead of Latvia,Slovenia and Georgia...
Evridiki's song & performance was perfect.......
All stadium was screaming her name......
My favorites for the final GREECE, FRANCE,BELARUS,FYR Macedonia
Good luck to everyone.. I hope the voting result be better in final...

Hey western cry-babyes,stop fooling around!!

I have two questions for you.

1. Imagine that, this year were qualified 10 western songs, instead of eastern ones. Im sure this already happened before. Do you thing that the entire eastern europe will start to complaining like you?

2. If you say that the vote is cheated, then how come the 10 eastern songs has not qualified last year, and the years before that? The eastern europe countries participate in ESC for decades. So what, this year they've voted for themselvs, but previous years not? Is that you are saying?

Just look at yourselfs. Your songs was trash this year. They did not deserv to be qualified. Accept it.

I must react about the issue that Macedonia go trough every final with the help of its neighbours. Thats not true because in the final Macedonia dont get great ammount of points from its neighbours or from ex YU counties. So I think that every time that Macedonia gets in the final its because has a quality song.

Also for example Greece never give points for Macedonia although its Macedonian neighbour and we all know that this is because of the political issues.

@ garry chelsea!

we also know and listen to other music. but this ours is so speical, cuz its not heard every day or on every radio or seen on mtv, its something not common in nowdays music productuion so ofcourse we like it very much and vote for it

maybe its time that the eastern bloc opened their minds to new kinds of music, instead of voting for a song because its their style of music, it must be really boring if you never hear anything new, there is a big wolrd of music out there open your minds and you might expand your enjoyment of music

Simon B [42732]
Fri 11 May 2007 21:02:25

@ Max Raspail

this is relavant, if i would like the song i would vote for it, no meter where is it from or its sang by a white or a black man or woman.
diffrent cultures react diffrent on the songs that we see in the contest

Max Raspail [36649]
Fri 11 May 2007 20:58:55

with better songs?

They could send the BEST songs ever in the history of the whole Contest and they wouldn't qualify.
DJ Bobo is right when he says: "Turkey could have lied the Turkish flag three minutes on the stage and they would have qualified, too."

Simon B [42732]
Fri 11 May 2007 20:52:05

@ Max Raspail

i totaly agree with you in this point
i also am not an enemy of west. i too want to support west to get back, maybe represent with some better songs so that this competition would be a bit more interesting again.

but look slovenia it self is a little country with only 2 milions inhabitants, so ofcourse this is a great succes fro us, even eith the televoting like this.

Max Raspail [36649]
Fri 11 May 2007 20:43:41

this kind of stuff was indeed here all the time.
but again: it wasn't such drastic like it is now. Now we have reached a dimension which is destroying the whole competition...

Again: 10 qualifiers from the East! No qualifier from the West!
I'm not an enemy of Eastern countries - I AM NOT AT ALL racistic. But this Contest is now in its pieces, that's a fact.

Simon B [42732]
Fri 11 May 2007 20:34:16

@ Max Raspail

The Conclusion is that in the end it comes down to the people to decide. but i allready wrote why i like the eastern europe songs more then the western. this is something that i myself can not deny, it is in my blood.
but this kind of stuff was here all the time it was way back it is now and it will be in the future

Max Raspail [36649]
Fri 11 May 2007 20:30:29

@ Simon B
well, perhaps you are an exception but again, you can't deny the facts.
You say you know these statistics and you make no conclusions out of it or what?
