A ballad wins, and no English lyrics!
Marija smashes ESC formula
The last time a ballad won the Eurovision Song Contest was in Oslo back in 1996 when Eimar Quinn took the crown for Ireland. For those that do not count The Voice or the previous winner, Nocturn as a ballad, it would be the first ballad winner since Rock n roll years 1994.
Carola was the last Eurovision Song Contest winner to capture the Eurovision Song Contest crown with a song containing no English. Fångad av en stormvind was 100% sung in Swedish during the 1991 competition in Italy. Although Dana International won for Israel in 1998 with Diva, the Hebrew language song featured a catchy chorus of famous names, rather than full worded lyrics and Nocturn for Norway in 1995 only had two lines of words in what was widely accepted as a piece of classical music.
Marija recorded nine versions of the song in total, including the English version and the dance remixes, and she sang the song in Finnish during the winner's press conference, but she remained true to her native language in the competition itself and took the crown. She also broke with a tradition of performing part of the winning reprise of the song in English, as Bobbysocks and Carola have done after winning.

Not everyone in the UK hates songs from Eastern Europe or that are sung in English. Molitva was my favourite song long before the night of the final; it's the first time my favourite song has won almost ever! And I've always loved songs sung in different languages. My openmindedness may be due to the fact I'm Welsh and we have our own language here which many speak in addition to English. However I don't think I'm typical of UK people; I think most do not appreciate Continental European music and many switch off if a song is sung in another language, or just dismiss it as second-rate. It's sad but true.
Several versions of the song 'Prayer' (Molitva)

"Molitva" was tipped (odds/polls) as most favourite SONG, this year, before and during the Contest!
Apparently, this is the winning ESC formula:
GREAT song + WONDERFUL voice + AMAZING performance
Which is why I still cannot get over it that, against ALL odds/polls *, Finland's Lordi won at the ESC 2006 ATHENS during that REALLY strange year of the inexplicable(!?) pan-European ... ESC protest vote, which brought an OK song to the top spot. Anyway, I enjoyed the ESC Semifinal and Final shows in Helsinki! See you all at the ESC 2008 Belgrade.
2007, The Year of the Ballad | one year too late!*
CONGRATULATIONS TO SERBIA!
Pls people dont say thet Serbian song is stolen! You know that Serbia stole the song from Albania!
Anastacia
Its very unlikely to get any release in the UK. It received nul points from London!
Hi !

Thank you....
Olivier

@ Kristina, actually LOTS of people complained when Finland won, as they couldn't stand it that a non-ESC type of song (a rock song) won and the performers were wearing masks... (Funny reasons to complain, really...
)
Well done Marija! I do hope that Serbia manage to keep the costs down when they host the show. The tickets this year were outrageously expensive.
What the f***'s what she looks like or may do in bed with other people got to do with it ???
Mind your own businesses and appreciate the song and accept that it has won !!!!
Bojan: true. nobody complained last year when FINLAND won, and the year before that 5 western and 5 eastern songs were in top 10. Strange. Nobody from the east complained about nordic or scandinavian bloc voting when finland won. but the west can't stand being beaten by EAST, that's why they complain. And YES they DO think they're better, me- being half western european half south-eastern european living in norway, trust me- (I can only speak for scandinavians) they do think they're SO much better than the east. Not everyone of course, but most people I meet think east is poor, pathetic and has low quality music. ooohhh that must be why GORAN BREGOVIC is sold out on Friday in Oslo
first winning song featured no English lyrics since Carola?
what were "Nocturne" and "Diva" in?
first ballad since Eimear?
what was "fly on the wings of love"? rap?
Don't know if it smashes the 'formula' but I bet she's smashed a few mirrors.........
Hehe, bitchy but very funny.
PS....Are we sure she's a she??
Umm, she does sound like one. Surely that's what counts?
Maybe she's a he and Serbia will get disqualified
Hehe, I dare you to try and look in her pants to find out.
@ Bojan
TBH, No nick said the truth, this song might not be welcomed in the UK (unless the English version goes through as miracle), but also any other huge hits from the continental Europe including the countries like Germany, Spain (unless was hit during the holiday’s times
), France,… enter their charts once in a blue moon.

Molitva IS a nice song (deserved top 5) but the EBU should have warned us to lock up our pets

Serbia 'stole' winning song
No nick, you said that this song is not very welcomed in West Europe and UK...???Well, I would rather listen to this song than to the UK song which is so CRAP- I am just being honest.I really don't understand why English speaking countries hate and don't accept anything that is not sang in English???That is really pathetic. So show more respect for other languages!!!
Also, Serbian language is one of the most phonetic languages, and is pleasant for ears...
West Europe must start to realise that East Europe has lots of potentials, but as East Europe was affected with wars, various attacks from the east, and financially is still unstable...these potentials can hardly be utilised and exploited.I reckon that West Europe does not understand what a war actually is, and that people can enjoy life and be happy without as much money. When western countries used to get highest positions on ESC contest, noone complained...so why do you make such a big deal then now!Are you BETTER than us?Make an excellent song and YOU will win!!!
What a load of old bollocks these statistics are, Dana International, although she had a line of famous names, they would have been the same in any language and just because these are names, doesn't make them English or any less of any other language. So how can you say that this song contained some words of English.
Viva nari'a, viva Victoria, Afrodita
Viva laDiva, viva Victoria, Cleopatra
where's the English - nincompoops !!!
May I congratulate with Marija for this fantastic win, after the dissillusion of seeing Malta out of the finals, this song remained my favourite one for winning this year's song contest. Although as I reacted in other forums the voting system has to be changed drastically, Marija was surely at her best singing this strong and beautiful song. Once more well done Marija, you have deserved it and didn't steal anything.
I had almost given up hope of seeing a ballad win ESC! Well done Marija! But don't worry the contest will become too boring, a ballad won't win next year again. Lots of countries will send calm songs, and then the few up-tempos ones will have less in their style to compete with.

I did give Ireland a vote,as did a lot of people i know. This is why the voting sucks, because you pay to vote for someone and they don't get the vote because its not in the top part of the votes from the country. All votes cast should count towards each countries scores.
I really don't understand why Ireland got no points from the UK this year. My mum is irish and we live hear in Portsmouth, in the UK and she was very disapointed at the UK not givinng Ireland any points!
Could it be because Ireland didn't give any points to the UK in 2003? Giving Jemini Nil Points. But.... Jemini were crap so i suppose we did diserve it lol!!
I hope Ireland don't withdraw. They always have fantastic songs!
OMG Irish music is not just Riverdance related.
Also songs sung badly tend not to get many points and this was sung badly.
Serbia was sung perfectly and was a beautiful song so was clear winner.
Also many Irish live in the UK and UK loves Irish music but it still got ZERO points from UK.
