MaltaSong chair Robert Abela reveals

Malta to revolutionise national selection

Robert Abela, the Maltese Head of Delegation and chairperson of the MaltaSong for Europe, spoke to the local press yesterday about his plans for next year, should he be asked to remain in his position by the Minister of Culture. Mr Abela promises a "small revolution" by giving emphasis to the song and not the singer.

Robert Abela said to the Sunday Circle that if he is asked to remain as Head of Delegation he is prepared to do what needs to be done to ensure a good result for Malta. What Mr Abela has in mind is this : possibly an expert jury will judge the songs submitted to choose which ones will go to the final. The jury will retain the right to change the singers of the songs.

Mr Abela also stated that he was very unhappy with this year's budget cuts. The usual amount of Lm60.000 (about €140.000) was reportedly cut down to 1/6, with the rest being covered by sponsorships, televoting income and ticket sales.

OGAE Malta reports that according to sources close to the MaltaSong Board preparations for next year will start as soon as next week with a meeting between interested parties to discuss proposals for the next Malta Song for Europe festival.

What Malta needs is a GOOD artist and a GOOD performer. Your songs are nice and catchy but sometimes the artist sucks!

Probably have more luck with the man in the photo singing.

As far as I remember, Olivia was not only the televoter's favourite. She was also the jury's favourite. I don't think juries work better than televoters. As I said, what Maltasong board needs is to get rid of those cheesy lyricists and composers. They give Maltese music a bad name. Maltasong should try to draw serious artists to participate in the Eurovision. They aren't internationally famous anyway and, after all, Eurovision could be a good launching pad for more international exposure. I don't see why they should shun it.

El Diablo - right, and so should the MF. Very bad composers there, even exporting their cheesy tunes, thankfully without success.

Marilyne Marina - I don`t trust international experts juries, they selected the estonian entry 06. Nothing more to say. Wasn`t there already a international jury at the MSFE this year ? They selected the finalists, as far as I know. It was the wrong singer for that song and the performance was simply too much, the asia theme irritating to most european televoters. Maybe singing about Vertigo wasn`t such a good idea, Vertigo makes you dizzy and not running to the phone.

@Christos;
That was a big vaste of money. Lordi didn't paty something to promote themselves, I dont think Serbia did either. Hopefully ESC won't be a spend-as-much-as-you-can-contest...

In my opinion it is right to emphatize the song rather that the singer, but this does not mean that there should be the possibility to change the singer to a song. A singer may have a better voice than another one, but not be suitable for the kind of songs the second one sings. Nowadays singer and song are usually tied very tightly. This year Spain chose the song and the group separately, but I don't think the result was exceptional, although their national selection was very interesting and fun to watch.

So, MaltaSongForEurope will be like the Swedish national selection in the 50s and early 60s! Cool!

The first step is to actually have GOOD songs in the NF. I mean, out of the 16 songs, I only really liked 1-3 this year, and last year... Some songs are just not suitable for such a hot competition, especially those disney-ballads.

this is just minor changes in focus, and not much seems to have been decided as yet :)

The songs were really avarge in the 2007's selection. I think Malta will send another ballad to ESC just like in 2005.

Malta song was good, but singer not so good. also last year.

Shouldn't the singer also sell the song? It is useless having a good song and a bad singer! It won't work anyway! Both are important. A case in point is serbja this year.

@Christos L

I hope Malta will never waste that much money on the Eurovision. 800000EUR is a money which could be well spent on more worthwhile projects.

WIth only 140.000 Euros they want to win the contest? Greece spent 800.000 Euros for Helena Paparizou promos.

What Malta needs is to get rid of those composers who clog the Eurovision with old fashioned ditties. They give Europe a bad impression of what Maltese music market actually is: some repetitive Fabrizio Faniello song, or some pompous and cheesy Julie and Ludwig tune. It's a lot more than that. Unfortunately, no one ever sees the likes of Winter Moods, Tribali and Chasing Pandora competing. Scar may be the only exception.

... "giving emphasis to the song and not the singer"....that sounds great but shouldn`t it be the case anyway ?

Good luck Malta. You've been very successful. Even though the last 2 years have been disappointing I know that your time will come again. I think it is a good idea to change up the selection process a little bit. It might make a differene, it certainly is worth a shot. See you in Belgrade (hopefully in the Finals)
