Not for sale!

Ruslana against human trafficking

Ruslana Lyzhicko, 2004 Eurovision Song Contest winner and former Ukrainian MP, participates in the Vital voices of Eurasia: a leadership summit for women & girls, launched by the international NGO vital voices global partnership. Ruslana has composed Not for sale, a song especially created for the project.

On the opening day of the four-day meeting held in Kyiv from 14-18 October, Ruslana participated in the press conference together with Vital voices leaders where she announced a joint project which aims to raise awareness among young women to fight human trafficking in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.

Ruslana played parts of her song, Not for sale, which encourages young women to be suspicious when approached by people promising them highly paid employment abroad.

I'm always dumb-struck when i read comments like AJ Heraghty's "I love Ruslana! Wild Dances was the best Eurovision entry ever!"

When she won, I had no words to express how much I hated her song. I hadn't hated a winning song that much since Toto Cotugno's 1990 win. But hey, different people have different tastes and we all have to deal with it.

* "human trafficking in Eastern Europe" IS a BIG problem. Nobody said it wasn't.
** Probably, possible victims may profit from this campaign. Ruslana's song may help some women to be more careful and not so naive.
*** But the question is: Is Ruslana getting involved in this campaign out of cheer compassion for her less fortunate fellow countrywomen or is she doing it for all the publicity it brings to her?
**** This question is even more relevant when we consider how she monopolized the Ukrainian 2005 contest, offering us back then 2 drearier and even more hateable versions of her winning song.

I was a little wrong, but Ukraine is among the five worst countries. (even if it's better to be among the top countries on the list).

I love Ruslana! Wild Dances was the best Eurovision entry ever! I really admire her for what shes doing, its a great awareness for a terrible issue. Lots of women from not just Ukraine but many Eastern European countries are trafficked into the UK and Ireland, this has to be stopped immidiately. I hope there will be much awareness raised among young girls.
TO BJORN: I didnt know that Ukraine has the fastest shrinking poulation in the world. Where did you hear that? I'm going to search it online to see if its true.

Dear ESC Today
I am writing to congratulate Ruslana on raising the issues about human trafficking at the Vital voices of Eurasia summit in Kiev Ukraine. I also thing that some women that do get trafficked are treated badly. On a other case the Morecambe Bay cocklers who worked for gang masters were also treated badly. By Ruslana raising the issue she is demonstrating that she has a social conscience as well as promoting the ideals of social responsibility. So once again I congratulate Ruslana for raising the issue and that she has my true admiration and respect.

Yours Truly

Björn, it's not a trick, that is a real problem in Eastern Europe, and if someone just approaches a young girl on the street promising highly paid employment abroad, he definitely doesn't have good & honest motives..!! Highly paid jobs are usually got in a very different way... ;)

Ruslana against human trafficking
Not very senstaional news :)
Anyway, well done to Ruslana, but what about which encourages young women to be suspicious when approached by people promising them highly paid employment abroad? It sounds like a trick to get people to stay in Ukraine (their population is the fastest shrinking in the world)

Very admirable cause - would be more admirable if she wasnt using it as an opportunity to play one of her songs.

Interesting article, but what has the Maltese flag to do with Ruslana? I thought she was from Ukraine...
