Since you are born and raised in Hilversum, of course you find the word Holland not offensive. But for people from Friesland, Groningen, Achterhoek, Limburg, Brabant (to name a few) it is offensive. Most of them don't consider themselves a Hollander. I sure don't. Using the term Holland for the Netherlands, is like using England for the UK, or Bavaria for Germany. The Netherlands is a whole lot more then Holland.

Wait a sec... Just when did ''a whole lot of Dutch people'' start finding the term Holland ''offensive''?!

I'm Dutch, born and bred in Hilversum and nearly everyone in my family uses the term Holland some time or other! Can I just remind you of ''Hollandse zuunigheid, Hollandse nieuwe, Hup Holland Hup?!''

The reason I (we) often use Holland in stead of The Netherlands when speaking english is just that it's twice as short and more people know what you mean.

Offensive? Yeah right.

PS: About this article, i think its a great theme, and very appropriate. And Kim-Lian is a very nice presenter. And if what I read here comes true the stage is gonna be spectacular, just like in Helsinki. Its just sad to think this is probably the only way we'll ever host another ESC again. On the other hand, what am i complaining about. Hup HOLLAND Hup! :P

Kim-Lian's father, Ron van der Meij, was a member of the duo Simple & Pure, in the National final of the Netherlands in 1990 with the song "Einde van de regentijd" !

Well said, w s. I know people don't mean to be offensive, but I see Holland as an offence, as I live in the Netherlands. Holland is most of the West-Coast. I mean, we are not going to call Serbia Kosovo are we? Or Belgium West-Flanders... Next is, indeed, the East just clearly does not like us, you can see that in the voting and how most of the east reacts to our ideas. The 5th jESC in Rotterdam is going to be the highlight in jESC history. We've produced some of the best organised ESC's, we'll continue this in Rotterdam this year :)

Edin, my countries name isn't Holland. Actually that name is offensive to a whole lot of Dutch people. And I didn't expect you to have high expectations of this year's jESC. After all the Netherlands lies in the west of Europe. And we are incapable of doing anything good. Maybe it is because of the cold. ;-)

Water as a theme for The Netherlands is almost obvious. We are a country with lots of water. For years we have water as an enemy but also as a friend. If you thing that this isn't original, next years theme isn't original either. (Cyprus: fun in the sun) What else did you expect from us? I think if we used the stereotypes tulips and mills, it would be less original. And in the past, was there any songcontest with the theme water? No.

Just wait untill you've seen the contest in Rotterdam and then give your opinion about originalty ;)

Won't Spain have to pay the participation fee as they withdrew after the deadline?
