From Iceland to Slovenia

Draw of running order finally available

The draw for the running order of the participants of the 48th Eurovision Song Contest took place at noon in the studio of LTV, the Latvian host broadcaster for the upcoming event. The results were secret until 16:00 GMT so are now allowed to be published. In the meantime, the fans of the contest suffered a hard time...
The 48th Eurovision Song Contest will open with Iceland. The so called bad luck position, the second one, is for Austria this year. The first part of the contest will be closed by Israel, which will enter the stage as 13th. The second part will be opened by The Netherlands. Ukraine, the only new participating country this year, will perform as 16th. Host country Latvia was drawn 21st and the country will close with Slovenia on the 26th position. Our reporter Aija Medinika was present at the draw, which was part of a small show, where the hosts were introduced to. Renard Kaupers and Marie N will take care of the presentation at May 24th. Rumours already told us since the day after the Eurovision victory of Latvia. During the show, one host opened shells with the country names in it while the other took pearls from a bin with a number on it. The last country was drawn by the Eurovision Song Contest responsible from the European Broadcasting Union, Sarah Yuen. Afterward she read the whole list again. I think it's great how everyone is predicting a winner when no country has selected a song yet.
Nothing is predictable in this contest. before 2002 eurovision, I predicted Latvia to win, and got a lot of laughs from people who said "Latvia has no chance". I was the one laughing after the contest though
As long as the middle songs are good and not boring that's all i'm looking for, and oh yes... VICTORY FOR IRELAND. WATCH OUT FOR US!

I think You're a Star will produce a winner for Ireland. Particularly the case if Michael Leonard or those twins get to represent us.
Position 3 is not one to be annoyed about. I would have preferred it if we had of be drawn 2nd or 3rd from the last, but it could have been worse. We could have been drawn 2nd or 4th. VICTORY FOR IRELAND!

Well Kamil ... looking at draw statistics ... performing 7th last has a record of winning songs !!! (7 times) So maybe that's a good sign for you

I'm happy too btw, as 14 is the "luckiest" draw seen from the beginning !

So, Poland will sing 20th... good
We had this number some years ago, in 1996, when Kasia Kowalska reached 14th place. Now it should be better, because:
1998 - Belgium (6th)
1999 - Malta (15th)
2000 - Finland (20th or something like that)
2001 - Estonia (winner!)
2002 - Malta (runner-up!)
The only thing we have to remember is that 20th is 7th in other way round. So...:
1998 - Sweden (10th)
1999 - Ireland (15th or 16th)
2000 - Sweden (8th)
2001 - Slovenia (7th)
2002 - Germany (21th)
Not as well as I want, but... remember, 20th gives us better chance to win, but we also can end as Corinna... May the best song win!

to marco!
it is true that ireland won in 1994, but remember that in 1994 there was no televoting, and people that gave the points are people that knows what they are doing, and not viewers that are watching only the first song, and the last one. in the last few years, that's what happened: all the winners are the last songs in the list..... but still I support Ireland, and I love Ireland, although I am from Israel..... goodluck Ireland! see ya next year in Dublin! Or Jerusalem... (I hope....)

I'm sooo satisified with this draw! Nice to see Sweden as no. 25! Nearly all my fav-countries were drawn in the second half except Iceland, Austria and Ireland which are drawn first.. None of the countries from 4-13 are my favourites. Oh, this is great! And please Romania - send Dan Bittman again!

I don't understand some of you... don't you think it's a little too soon to tell who will win and who will get relegated. If you follow ESC carefully you should know that it's impossible to guess anything here.
I'm from Slovenia and I hope Karmen will not represent Slovenia. Her last two songs have been almost direct copies of Še in še. Plus, she is a monsterous bitch, a snotty little princess who thinks she can get anything she wants. And she can't dance... It took her 3 months to learn the moves for EMA last year. My bets are Alenka Godec or maybe Pika Bozic (formerly of Sound Attack)... They have great songs now. And the Slovenian Popstars band, Bepop, also said they entered the competition. They're gonna win big time and the song quality is not even important.

Malta was drawn 5th. Since the introduction of the televoting system, songs drawn 5th achieved the following final results:

2002: Spain, Rosa - "Europe's Living a Celebration" - 7th
2001: Israel, Tal Sundak "Ein davar" - 16th
2000: France, Sofia Mesfari "On aura le ciel"- 23rd
1999: UK, Precious - "Say it again" - 12th
1998: Switzerland, Gunvor - "Lass Ihn' - 25th

Having said all that, I still believe that a GOOD SONG can pull enough votes to let the country end top-10...top-5....or even win the contest no matter its running-order!!!

Ola Sweden:
You are right, but since we all felt a bit too disapointed last year with afrodites debacle, and you were all so hipe about winning last year, it really felt very sad not to have sweden win! But if you come up with a good song this year, not necesarily better that last years, the event could be yours!!!!! hehehehe.... Good luck sweden!!!!!!!!! Heja Sverige!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, lets see - I don't have much else better to do so I'll rect on the draw

1. Iceland - poor them - a poor draw in 2001 meant a v poor result (however Cyprus proved that 1st position isn't all bad)
2. Austria - guten tag - not too sure, our (uk)'s high score last year showed nothings impossible if you have a good song, tho not position A perhaps
3. Ireland - thank you, at last we have an advantage over them - lol (love ya really!)
4. Turkey - they'll need a v. good song to do well from here because no country has EVER won from this position
5. Malta - it's doubtful they'll win from here - unfortunately - Malta we love and u could win (if u send a good song)
6. Bosnia-Herzegovina - getting better - although western countries like us (unfortunately) prefer to vote for others no matter how good the song
7. Portugal - no comment (tho garunteed 12 point from France)
8. Croatia - kako si - this is a great position fro winning (tho perhaps not know televoting is in action continent-wide) - let's hope they send an "emotional" song - lol!
9. Cyprus - good enough for a good score but perhaps no to win
10. Germany - at last Germany have a pantsw draw! For years Germany's had favourable draws, now it's the others turn - tho this is good enough if they send a decent song
11. Russia - not much to say here
12. Spain - mejor q el ano pasado - con una buena cancion.... posiblemente!
13. Israel - I'm running out of things to say - slightly better than last year
14. the Netherlands - A good position as 2000 showed - well done the Ntherlands
15. United Kingdom - thank-you, tho, being my pessimistic self we could do better
16. Ukraine - the new countries never get an early position - welcome to the family!
17. Greece- send something good and u can win it from here
18. Norway - send a song like I Evighet and we'll love it!
19. France - j'espere que vous ganez enfin - envoyez une chanson aussi bonne que l'anee derniere et il se passera!
20. Poland - a good draw... again, however as in 2001 a good position is always a garuntee of a good position - however, with a national final... perhaps!
21. Latvia - great draw for the home country (maybe not a good thing if you want to avoid hosting the competition again!)
22. Belgium - I predict your gonna win! (y not?!)
23. Estonia - have ne money left for hosting it next year?
24. Romania - send a good song - and plz dont swap votes again!
25. Sweden - well this is ironic.... you've got a great chance - send us a winner!
26. Slovenia - a national final with televoting could give 2 u - but unfortunately ppl (probabl like me) will probably complain is the final song wins - i'll do my best - good luck

And finally - watachi no hashi wa doko desu ka? xd/lol!

wow....finally the biggest day of 2002 arrives..sorry second biggest! sweden have a fabulous chance to win next year now...I firmly believe had Afrodite been drawn in the last 5, it would have won by a mile! I also feel sorry for finland's non inclusion, another song which should have ranked higher than last 5. So onto the stats...last year no.1 finish in top 6, last position song finish in bottom 5 (relegated). Song straight after break finished bottom 5 (relegated).

1st position: 3 times in the last 5 years has singing from 1st meant relegations, although it is one of the best positions to start from... Many song has won from 1st...remember diggy loo diggy lay! he he Prediction: Iceland to finish last im afraid!

middle position (after break): Last year we had Laura scream her head off to no effect, Malene give the weakest performance ive ever seen (even weaker than that of Precious uk 99&#039 sorry fans! Andy rank outsider maja strutt her stuff for bosnia-herzegovina! I worry about this position, with 26 participants the song needs to be punchy (like finland), but i feel this may be the only position where you may not be in charge of your destiny. Prediction: Netherlands, UK, Ukraine, Greece and Norway all finish in bottom 10.

Last Position: In the last 5 years, singing from last has mean relegation on 3 occasions, and once 2nd position. Unless slovenia repeat 2001's performance of energy, or allow Karmen Stavec to perform, we could be seeing goodbyes to slovenia for a year! Prediction: Sweden to romp it with their best position ever! Slovenia to finish bottom 5. Oh and estonia/latvia top 3...

Final goodbyes!

1: Im my opinion, Sweden will take everyone to the cleaners...its a pity because im from England, would love UK to do it this time around!
2: Possibly Latvia, host country allways finishes high!
3: Estonia: what can i say, they should have finished 2nd last year!
4: Ireland. Youre a star will pick a great singer and a great song, watch out for ireland!
5: Hopefully UK again, but my head says either France or Spain (ot deserves a top 5 finish! but so do france)

Well, I think it's safe to say that Sweden's chances of winning the 48th Contest just have increased a little...
And with our position in the running order I should feel VERY lucky again that we're part of the Big 4...

Again good chances for the two participating Baltic States! Good draw for Belgium too, Yipppppieeee, anyway good luck to all! I think all depends on a good song!

Finally we got the running order!

Malta drawn 5th.....this means that many Maltese will watch the first part of the show only, and then wait until the voting starts. It's a pity!

Big chances for Belgium, Estonia, Romania, Sweden and Slovenia, drawn towards the end!

so..who's good at the various running order-final ranking statistics??
