Son de Sol, three sisters represent Spain
On 6th March 2005 Son de Sol won the Spanish national final in which the Spanish representative for the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest was selected. With the song Brujería, the three Andalusian sisters Lola, Esperanza and Sole will be taking part in the final in Kyiv. Esctoday.com had an interview with them...
Can you shortly introduce yourself and tell us when and how Son de Sol was created?
We are three sisters from Écija, raised in a family of pure flamenco singers and dancers dating back to four or five generations. We were brought up in the world of art and we came into contact with artists since we were kids.
Lola and Esperanza have got a degree in dance each and Sole, the youngest, a degree in journalism. We have always been working in the world of music, though we got our first record contract only six years ago. We have released two albums and Brujería will be the third.
Why did you decide to participate in the Spanish national Eurovision Song Contest selections?
It all happened by chance. There was only one day left when we found out about the deadline to submit the songs for the Spanish final. We submitted our tune practically unfinished and it was finally selected. One thing led to another ever since.
If TVE would still have used the Operacíon Triunfo format, would you have considered participating?
It would not have been possible. We would never have been selected, since we are three sisters. Only solo artists are accepted for Operación Triunfo, but not groups.

You sang the song Brujería, can you tell us more about the song and composer?
We can't say much about the composer, because we have never met him in person, though he has written two songs for our album. We think that his writing is quite fresh and rhyming. As for the song, we think it is a tune with many features to be a winning song. It's catchy, funny and rhyming. That's why it is a song suitable for a good stage performance, which is a very important factor at the Eurovision Song Contest. In addition, the base of the song comprises many international music styles with a Spanish sound.
You won the national final. Did you expect it? How did you feel about it?
When we submitted our song, we didn't expect to win. However, it's true that we could sense the support of the people at the rehearsals and we were feeling more and more that we could win. When they finally said our name, we were very excited for us and for all the people who have always trusted us like our family and friends, for everybody.

You have recorded a video clip which looks very Andalusian. Are you proud of your region and representing your country?
Well, it makes you really proud that so many people give you their vote to represent their country. It is now a big responsability for us, but it is also very gratifying. We are looking forward to representing Spain. We are also very proud to be from Andalusia, because we have always believed that it is the world's most beautiful land with a major culture and art.
Recently a Spanish feminist organisation complained about the lyrics of your song claiming they are 'in violation of the women's dignity'. What's your opinion on that?
Yes, it is true that the controversy has broken out lately, but, thankfully, it has not been supported by the radio and TV media or the public in general. We think that this organisation is totally wrong, because the song doesn't outrage the women at all. In case it did, we would certainly not sing it, because we are great believers in the women's rights and we have always been three tireless fighters.
When are you leaving for Kyiv and how does your agenda look like these last days before your departure?
We are leaving for Kyiv on Sunday 15th May, but we're likely to be in Madrid as of 11th May rehearsing and putting the final touches to the choreography and costumes.
What can we expect from your stage act in Kyiv?
We hope to be calm and relaxed and that our voices are okay. We wish that the sound, the floodlighting and the production are good and that everything comes off well. We expect that the people attending the live show and the viewers at home pick up on our music and enjoy our song. We hope to give a brilliant performance.
What's Son de Sol's target in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest?
Like everybody else, we would also like to win, but if we don't win, we would wish to reach the highest possible placing and that this placing helps us have a long and good-quality career in this hard world of music.

Three Spanish sisters rattling off the lyrics of their song at a super fast speed...
How do you react when the 100th journalist starts talking about Las Ketchup and how do you compare yourself with Las Ketchup?
The similarities that we see between Las Ketchup and us, are that both groups are two trios of Andalusian sisters and that we share the same producer, Queco.
But we can't see any other resemblance, neither in our singing, nor in our dancing, music style, staging, dressing and the rest of it. Their style is completely different from ours.
Nevertheless, we don't get annoyed at all when they compare us to Las Ketchup and, what's more, we wish Brujería sold the 17 million copies that The Ketchup Song sold.
Almost every year a Spanish song invades the charts in Europe when Europeans return from their holidays at the Spanish Costas. Will Brujería be the European Summer hit of 2005?
Let's hope so! That is what we have been dreaming for years.
Do you still have any message to our visitors all over Europe?
We ask and thank the esctoday.com visitors for their support. We would also like to ask them to listen to our album, so that they can have an idea of what kind of music we sing. We are sure that they will like it. Thanks a lot to all the Eurovision fans for all the love they show us everyday.
Esctoday.com kindly thanks Antonio, María del Mar and Son de Sol for making this interview possible. We wish Son de Sol de best of luck in the final of the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest!
