EuroBlog Round-up Morrissey Edition (15 January)
Every week the Euroblog Round-up collects the best gossip, rumours and speculation about the Eurovision Song Contest from blogs around the Internet. This week there is only one rumour apparently worth speculating or gossiping about. Morrissey may write - or even sing - the United Kingdom's entry to the Song Contest.
The BBC confirmed last week that it's in talks with the ex-Smiths singer. That one piece of news has dominated almost every song contest blog out there. It's also dominated many non-song contest blogs. Still Euroblogger has found some speculation on the Croatian selection, some Massiel urging you to vote for Misión Eurovisión, and some Anzej Dezan in addition to all the Morrissey. Plus, Euroblogger makes a proposal.
LET ME, LET ME, LET ME
(GET WHAT I WANT)
Of course nothing has been settled, but the Internet (not to mention major news outlets around the world) exploded with speculation after the BBC confirmed that Morrissey is "in talks" to be involved in the 2007 Contest on Britain's behalf.
Some fans were ecstatic like the Non-Working Monkey who wrote "I am enormously happy all of a sudden. Morrissey! On the Eurovision Song Contest, representing Britain! (Possibly.) I am crying tears of pure joy." (here)

But other fans like LiveJournaler JamaIsNeutral didn't really know what to make of the whole thing. She wrote, "I love Morrissey. I do. I have CDs, I have... Well, I just have CDs." After thinking about that she continues, "I think he's funny and his songs make me sing along without wanting to. But Morrissey at Eurovision? Oh no. No no no no. That's my 'decent music'-world colliding with my 'decent trashy music'-world, and I just can't have that."
JamaIsNeutral does come up with an interesting angle. She claims, "Morrissey is an international institution; he can't just represent the UK. He'd be selling himself short! Now that's an idea. At least as she imagines it things might go like this in May, "Hello, my name is Morrissey and I'll be representing every country taking part here tonight. This is my song for Spain. It's called 'Bullfighting is for wankers'. Thank you." (here)
Many Americans (despite being traditionally Eurovision-deprived) caught notice of the contest now that Morrissey's name is attached. The Instant Darma blogger in Los Angeles claims he loves "the Eurovisions" and seems happy that a hero from his "angsty adolescence in Eagan, Minnesota" is poised to sing for England. Crikey. Euroblogger has been to Eagan, Minnesota (his first love grew up there) and:
(Angsty + Eagan Minnesota + Eurovision) * Morrissey = a little scary

Of course England's own Schlagerboys are having a hard time with all the Morrissey speculation. "The thing about Morrissey is, he's a bit dreary isn't he?", they moan. "And Morrissey doesn't do dance routines. ... And there would probably be guitars on stage. And not much glitter. And if there was glitter it would be 'ironic-glitter' which is no fun at all." (here)
Finally the BBC "leaked" a preview of what Morrissey might be working on (with the help of Richard Web). You can listen to it here.
As near as Euroblogger can tell the lyrics include:

Eurovision
I really must confess last year's entry did depress me so
Surely I could write something less banal and trite you know
I know all the rules
And I'll even do a dance to them
If you don't believe me let me show you what I mean
Save all your kisses for me ...
You gotta speed it up, slow it down ...
Like a puppet on a string ...
IN OTHER NEWS
The Illyrian Gazette speculates about potential Dora participants for the Croatian selection in one of the few Eurovision Song Contest related blog entries this week that didn't mention Morrissey. After running down all the rumoured participants he says, "the concept of Goran Bare showing up at Eurovision is every bit as improbable as Morrissey doing the same thing.". (here)
Gah. There's that name again.

The Goggles at The Googles Do Nothing noticed that Anzej Dezan has relaunched his official website and he include mp3s of all his singles on it. (here) Everyone remembers Anzej's performance of Mr. Nobody for Slovenia last year.
THIS IS SEALAND CALLING
Did everyone notice that the Principality of Sealand is for sale? The small "island" is actually a man-made platform lying in international waters in the North Sea off the coast of Britain. The current tenants claim that the platform is a sovereign nation, but are now willing to transfer the nation to new tenants for around $977 million US dollars or £750 thousand British pounds.
Of course with the right backers the readers of esctoday.com could join Euroblogger in acquiring Sealand, joining the Eurovision Broadcasting Union and entering the Song Contest itself. Any takers? Anyone? Anyone?

YOU GOTTA VOTE: MISION EUROVISION
Of course everyone can join in the voting for the Spanish selection by registering on the Misión Eurovisión website (here). Your own esctoday.com has more information about the voting procedure here.
If you don't want to help Spain for esctoday.com and Euroblogger, then do it for Massiel who really wants you to get out the vote if these short clips the Schlagerboys dug up are any indication:
