Sarbel, who will be flying the flag for Greece in Helsinki, spoke to esctoday.com about himself, his immediate plans, his favourite entries and his views on the contest.

By monitoring the fans’ reactions, the polls and the betting odds one can tell that there is no clear favourite this year, although Yassou Maria ranks high in most. That means that it is pretty much up to you and your performance to win this. How much does that weigh on your shoulders?

Well, I think that that is what everybody has to do. It all depends on all of our performances and all of our singing. We all have to try our best cause year after year it becomes more difficult. As far as the weight on my shoulder goes, I don’t really feel pressured since as I said before I’m giving to this contest and to Greece my all, I’m doing my best.

Can you tell us a bit about the staging of the song in Helsinki? Will we see anything different from the act that won you the Greek final?

I can’t say much about that since the priority now is the promo tour, which I enjoy very much. Every minute of it is very exciting.

Promo tour, TV appearances, interviews, rehearsals. You have been constantly on the go since the beginning of the year. How much does an artist have to sacrifice for Eurovision? Is there any time left for Sarbel at the end of the day?

I don’t feel I am sacrificing something. I am just trying to do my best and that, of course, demands a lot of effort and almost no free time. But I don’t nag since I am very happy to do all that, I’ m very happy I take part in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Where will your European fans hope to see you before Helsinki?

I have already been to Russia, Bulgaria, Turkey and among others I am planning on going to Sweden and Romania.

How do you unwind? What is the one thing that relaxes you and helps you go on?

Calling my friends, telling jokes, being with my family. These things make me feel really good since all the people in my life is what keeps me going on and on.

What kind of music do you personally like?

I like everything to tell you the truth, all kinds of music. It depends on the time, my spirits, etc.

In your recent visit in Turkey we saw you sing in perfect Turkish, something the Turkish people really appreciated, and something that none of us knew about you. Do you hold any more aces up your sleeve?

Well, you’ll see… I’m not going to reveal all my secrets…yet! Hahaha

Have you heard any of the other entries this year? Any favourites?
Of course I have. I like many songs. I really like the Bulgarian entry, of course the Cypriot entry, which is a great song, among others.

There has been quite a lot of discussion in the Greek and Turkish media about Yassou Maria and Shake it up shekerim being similar. What is your view on the matter?

The two songs are very different. Their only similarity is actually the phrase “shake it up”. Other than that the style of the two songs is different. I don’t think that they are similar.

Do you think the Eurovision Song Contest is about the music or the show? Or both?

I would say both. Everything matters in this show, that, let’s not forget, is designed for being broadcast on television. So I couldn’t say that the song only matters, or the show. It’s both that matter as everything else that we watch on TV.

How has your participation in the contest influenced your career so far? Has there been a noticeable change in the way people look at you?

I don’t see any differences in my career yet. People in Greece used to show their appreciation before that and I hope this is going to continue after the contest. The only thing that I would say is different is the fact that I managed to meet so many of them during the promo tour. That was amazing!

Will we be seeing you at the Euroclub?

Of course you will. And we’ll dance together and enjoy ourselves.

Do you have a message for the esctoday.com readers?

Yes… I wish to everybody that takes part good luck and I hope for both the participants and the viewers to enjoy the Eurovision Song Contest. For those that are going to watch it at home I suggest that you sit comfortably on your couches and simply enjoy the music and the show…

esctoday.com would like to thank Sarbel and wish him the best!
