| The new Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport opened on 29th March, 2001, and was mainly build to enlarge the city's infrastructural capacity for the 2004 Olympics. It is big, modern and beautiful. The airport is located about 40 minutes from downtown Athens. Many European airlines fly directly to Athens.
